For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Gabon flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent when washing the flag to maintain its bright colours. Avoid bleach or any harsh chemicals that may lead to fading or damage.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent it from snagging or fraying.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry naturally. Do not tumble dry, as high temperatures can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing to prevent moisture-related damage. Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  3. Folding the Gabon Flag:
    • Lay the flag out flat on a clean surface, ensuring there are no wrinkles or creases. The green stripe, representing the forests, should be on top.
    • Fold the flag lengthwise once, bringing the bottom edge (blue stripe) up to meet the top edge (green stripe). Ensure the edges align perfectly, with the yellow stripe visible in the middle.
    • Fold the flag lengthwise again, creating a long narrow rectangle with all three stripes (green, yellow, and blue) visible along the top edge.
    • Starting from the hoist end (the side where the header is attached), fold the flag into a triangular shape. Bring the bottom corner up to the opposite edge to form the first triangle.
    • Continue folding the flag into triangles, working your way towards the opposite end, ensuring the folds are tight and neat with each step.
    • Once you reach the end, tuck the remaining fabric securely into the final fold to complete the triangular shape. Ensure no part of the flag is left hanging loose.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp edges or rough surfaces that may cause it to tear or snag.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly secured when displayed, preventing unnecessary strain on the fabric that could lead to wear.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during extreme weather conditions or overnight to prolong its life and keep it in pristine condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If you notice small tears or fraying, remove the flag and take it to a professional seamstress for repairs to prevent further damage.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows significant signs of wear, consider replacing it to maintain its vibrant appearance for special events and important occasions.

Flying the Gabon Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • If using the header with loops, attach the reinforced loops to the clips or hooks on the halyard, ensuring a tight and secure connection before raising the flag.
    • For a vertical sleeve flag, simply slide the flagpole through the sleeve pocket, ensuring it fits snugly. Make sure the flag is evenly distributed along the pole and securely fastened at the base before hoisting it up.
    • The flag should be raised briskly and smoothly to the top of the flagpole. Make sure the flag is not touching the ground during this process.
    • It is customary to raise the flag in the morning, typically at 8:00 AM, and ensure it is flying freely without tangles.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displayed, the Gabon flag should always occupy a position of prominence. If placed next to other flags, it should either be at the same height or, if displayed alone, centrally on the highest flagpole.
    • The green stripe (representing Gabon’s forests) must always be at the top, followed by the yellow and blue stripes.
    • Indoors, it should be displayed vertically with the green stripe on the observer’s left. Ensure the flag is in good condition and never tattered or worn when displayed.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • When lowering the Gabon flag to half-mast for mourning, it should first be raised to the top of the pole for a moment before being slowly lowered to halfway. This signifies respect while mourning.
    • To end the half-mast display, raise the flag fully to the top of the pole before lowering it completely. Remember to consult official guidelines regarding national periods of mourning.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Gabon flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. It is important that the flag is not left flying at night unless it is properly illuminated.
    • During the lowering ceremony, the flag must be taken down slowly and ceremoniously. Avoid letting it touch the ground as a sign of respect.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • The flag should not be flown during extreme weather conditions, such as storms or high winds, to prevent damage. Bring the flag indoors or lower it in such conditions to preserve its longevity and maintain its appearance.
    • If the flag becomes wet, it should be carefully dried out before being stored or displayed again.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Gabon flag becomes too worn or damaged to be respectfully flown, it should be retired. The proper way to retire a flag is to burn it in a dignified manner. Alternatively, you may contact a local flag organisation for proper disposal.
    • Never discard the flag in regular waste. Retiring the flag properly ensures the symbol of Gabon is treated with the utmost respect.

By following these care instructions, you’ll preserve the vibrant colours and ensure your flag remains in top condition for years to come. Caring for your flag is a way to honour both its symbolism and the pride it represents.
