To maintain the vibrant appearance and longevity of your Gabon flag, please adhere to the following care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Wash: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, ensuring the colours and fabric remain intact. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag and set the machine to a gentle cycle with cold water to avoid any damage.
    • Drying: Allow the flag to air dry by laying it flat or hanging it up. Avoid tumble drying, as excessive heat can shrink or harm the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Safe Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it to prevent mould or mildew. Store it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
  3. Folding the Gabon Flag:
    • Place the flag flat on a clean surface, ensuring it is free from wrinkles or creases. The green stripe, symbolising the forests, should be on top.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the bottom edge (blue stripe) up to meet the top edge (green stripe). Make sure the edges align smoothly, revealing the yellow stripe in the centre.
    • Fold the flag lengthwise once more, creating a long, narrow rectangle with all three stripes (green, yellow, and blue) displayed along the top edge.
    • Starting from the side with the header, begin folding the flag into a triangle shape. Take the bottom corner and bring it up to the opposite edge to form the first triangle.
    • Continue folding the flag into successive triangles, working towards the opposite end, ensuring that each fold is tight and neat.
    • When you reach the end, securely tuck in any remaining fabric to complete the triangular shape, making sure nothing is left hanging loose.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached and can move freely when displayed.
    • Flag Exposure: To extend the life of the flag, take it down during severe weather or at night to minimise exposure to harsh conditions.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If you observe fraying or wear, consider using a spare flag while having the damaged one repaired by a professional seamstress.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows significant signs of wear, consider purchasing a new one to ensure you always have a fresh symbol for important occasions.

Flying the Gabon Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • When using the header with loops, connect the reinforced loops to the clips or hooks on the halyard, ensuring a firm and secure attachment before hoisting the flag.
    • For a vertical sleeve flag, just slide the flagpole through the sleeve pocket, ensuring it fits tightly. Make certain the flag is evenly aligned along the pole and securely anchored at the base before raising it.
    • When raising the flag, it should be done quickly and smoothly to the top of the flagpole, ensuring it does not touch the ground during this process.
    • It is customary to hoist the flag in the morning, around 8:00 AM, and ensure it flies freely without any tangling.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • The Gabon flag should always be displayed prominently. When placed alongside other flags, it should be at the same height; if it is the only flag displayed, it should be centred on the highest flagpole.
    • The green stripe, which represents Gabon’s forests, must always be positioned at the top, followed by the yellow and blue stripes.
    • Indoors, the flag should be shown vertically with the green stripe on the observer’s left. Always ensure the flag is in good condition, free from any tears or wear.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
    • To lower the Gabon flag to half-mast for mourning, it should first be raised to the top of the pole for a moment before being gently lowered to the halfway point. This act signifies respect during periods of mourning.
    • When concluding the half-mast display, the flag should be fully raised to the top of the pole once more before being completely lowered. Be sure to adhere to official guidelines concerning national mourning periods.
  • Flag Etiquette at Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Gabon flag should be hoisted at sunrise and taken down at sunset. It should not be left flying at night unless it is adequately illuminated.
    • During the ceremony of lowering the flag, it should be done slowly and respectfully, ensuring that it does not touch the ground.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag in severe weather conditions, such as storms or strong winds, to prevent damage. It is advisable to bring the flag indoors or lower it during such conditions to maintain its integrity and appearance.
    • If the flag gets wet, ensure it is carefully dried out before storing or displaying it again.
  • Retiring the Flag:
    • When the Gabon flag becomes too worn or damaged to be displayed respectfully, it should be retired. The appropriate way to do this is to burn it in a dignified manner. Alternatively, reach out to a local flag organisation for proper disposal methods.
    • Never dispose of the flag in regular waste. Properly retiring the flag ensures that the symbol of Gabon is treated with the utmost dignity and respect.

By following these care guidelines, you’ll help ensure that your Fully Sewn Gabon Flag remains a vibrant, durable symbol of pride for many years to come. Proper care reflects the respect you have for your heritage and country.
