To ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of your Lesotho flag, follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, helping to maintain its colour and fabric integrity. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag and select a gentle cycle with cold water to prevent damage.
    • Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Do not use a tumble dryer, as high heat can shrink or harm the material.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it to prevent mould or mildew. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  3. Folding the Lesotho Flag:
    • Lay the Flag Flat: Begin by placing the Lesotho flag on a clean, even surface with the emblem side facing down.
    • Initial Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the left edge to meet the right edge to form a long rectangle. Make sure the edges align precisely.
    • Second Fold: Keeping the flag folded in half, fold it lengthwise once more, resulting in a narrower rectangle with the emblem still hidden inside.
    • Create Triangles: Starting from the hoist side (the side that attaches to the pole), begin making triangular folds:
      • Take the bottom corner of the folded edge and fold it diagonally towards the top edge to form a triangle.
      • Continue folding in this manner along the length of the flag, creating overlapping triangles with each fold.
    • Final Triangular Shape: When you reach the end of the flag, you should have a neatly compact triangular shape. Tuck in any loose fabric to secure the flag.
    • Safe Storage: Store the folded flag in a protective bag or box to keep it safe from dust and damage until you’re ready to display it.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
    • Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is securely fastened and can move freely while displayed.
    • Flag Exposure: To prolong the life of the flag, take it down during severe weather or in the evening to reduce exposure to harsh elements.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If you notice any fraying or wear, replace the flag with a spare and have the damaged flag professionally mended by a seamstress.
    • Replacement: As the flag nears the end of its lifespan, consider purchasing a new one to ensure you always have a fresh flag ready for important occasions.

Flying the Lesotho Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Before hoisting the flag, ensure that the flagpole is clean and unobstructed.
    • Utilising Header with Loops: For flags featuring reinforced loops, thread the halyard through each loop and fasten it securely with sister clips to keep the flag in position while hoisting.
    • Utilising Vertical Sleeve: If your flag includes a vertical sleeve, slide it onto the flagpole until it reaches the preferred height. Make sure the sleeve fits tightly around the pole to prevent any shifting during display.
    • Raise the flag promptly, ensuring it reaches the top of the pole without delay, as this demonstrates respect for the national symbol.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When flying the Lesotho flag outdoors, it should be hoisted at the top of the pole and displayed above all other flags, except for the national flag.
    • If showcasing multiple flags, position the Lesotho flag to the left (from the viewer’s perspective) of any other flags in a horizontal arrangement.
    • When displayed on a vertical pole, ensure that the flag is facing outward and fully extended to prominently display its colours and emblem.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
    • To fly the Lesotho flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole and then lower it to the halfway mark.
    • This gesture signifies mourning or respect; ensure the flag remains at half-mast during official times of national mourning or remembrance.
    • The flag should stay at this position until the designated time is over, after which it should be raised back to the top before being lowered entirely.
  • Flag Etiquette for Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Lesotho flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. If illuminated at night, it may remain up.
    • If the flag is not illuminated, it should be taken down promptly at sunset to maintain its dignity.
    • Always raise the flag in the morning with pride and lower it in the evening with care and respect.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the Lesotho flag during severe weather conditions, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, to prevent damage.
    • If bad weather is forecasted, temporarily take the flag down and store it safely to protect its fabric and colours.
    • In light rain or wind, ensure the flag is securely fastened to the pole to prevent it from becoming tangled or torn.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Lesotho flag shows signs of fraying, fading, or damage beyond repair, it is important to retire it with dignity.
    • The preferred method of retirement is to burn the flag respectfully, ensuring the act is conducted privately and with honour.
    • Alternatively, consider burying the flag in a respectful ceremony that acknowledges its role as a symbol of national pride and heritage.

By following these care instructions, you’ll help your Fully Sewn Lesotho Flag remain vibrant, durable, and a symbol of pride for years to come. Proper care reflects the respect you have for your heritage and nation.
