To ensure the longevity and vibrancy of your Lesotho flag, please adhere to the following care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always clean the flag using a mild detergent to reduce fading. Steer clear of bleach or harsh chemicals that could harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to prevent any snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as excessive heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Lesotho Flag:
    • Prepare the Flag: Start by laying the Lesotho flag on a clean, flat surface with the front (the side with the emblem) facing down.
    • First Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the left edge with the right edge to create a long rectangle. Ensure the edges are perfectly aligned.
    • Second Fold: With the flag still folded in half, fold it again lengthwise. This will create a narrower rectangle, with the emblem still facing inwards.
    • Triangular Folds: Starting from the hoist side (the side where the flag attaches to the pole), begin making triangular folds:
      • Take the bottom corner of the folded edge and fold it diagonally to the top edge, forming a triangle.
      • Continue folding in this manner, moving along the length of the flag. Each fold should create a triangle, overlapping slightly with the previous fold.
    • Final Fold: Once you reach the end of the flag, you should have a compact triangular shape. Tuck any excess fabric into the folds to secure the flag neatly.
    • Storage: Place the folded flag in a protective bag or box to keep it safe and dust-free until you are ready to display it.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly fastened when displayed to prevent any undue strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during severe weather or overnight to maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and consult a professional seamstress for repairs.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows signs of significant wear, it’s advisable to purchase a new one to maintain its appearance during important events.

Flying the Lesotho Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Ensure the flagpole is clean and free of obstructions before raising the flag.
    • Using Header with Loops: If your flag has reinforced loops, thread the halyard through the loops and secure it with sister clips to hold the flag in place while raising.
    • Using Vertical Sleeve: For flags with a vertical sleeve, simply slide the flag onto the flagpole until it reaches the desired height. Ensure the sleeve fits snugly around the pole to prevent movement during display.
    • Raise the flag briskly, ensuring it reaches the top of the pole without hesitation. This shows respect and pride in the national symbol.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When flying the Lesotho flag outdoors, ensure it is hoisted at the top of the pole and flown above any other flags, with the exception of the national flag.
    • If displaying multiple flags, ensure the Lesotho flag is positioned to the left (from the viewer’s perspective) of other flags in a horizontal arrangement.
    • When displaying the flag on a vertical pole, ensure the flag is facing outward and is fully extended to show its colours and emblem clearly.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the Lesotho flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole and then lower it to the halfway point.
    • This act is a sign of mourning or respect; ensure the flag is displayed at half-mast during designated times of national mourning or remembrance.
    • When the flag is at half-mast, it should remain in this position until the designated time has passed, then return it to the top of the pole before lowering it completely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Lesotho flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. If the flag is illuminated during the night, it can remain up.
    • If the flag is not illuminated, it should be taken down promptly at sunset to preserve its dignity and respect.
    • Always ensure that the flag is raised in the morning with a sense of pride and lowered in the evening with care.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the Lesotho flag in severe weather conditions, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, to prevent damage to the flag.
    • If inclement weather is expected, take the flag down temporarily and store it safely to protect its fabric and colours.
    • In cases of light rain or wind, ensure the flag is properly secured to the pole to prevent it from becoming tangled or torn.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Lesotho flag becomes frayed, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it is important to retire it respectfully.
    • The preferred method for retirement is to burn the flag in a dignified manner, ensuring it is done in a private setting with respect.
    • Alternatively, you may choose to bury the flag in a respectful ceremony, acknowledging its service as a symbol of national pride and heritage.

By following these care guidelines, your flag will retain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for many years. Caring for your flag not only preserves its quality but also honours the pride and heritage it represents.
