To ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of your Kenya flag, follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, as this will help maintain its colour and fabric integrity. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag and use a gentle cycle with cold water to prevent any damage.
    • Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Avoid using a tumble dryer, as high heat can shrink or harm the material.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing to prevent mould and mildew. Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  3. Folding the Kenya Flag:
    • Lay the Flag Face Down: Position the Kenya flag on a clean surface with the design facing down to safeguard its colours and symbols.
    • Fold in Half Lengthwise: Bring the left edge of the flag over to the right edge, creating a long rectangular shape. Make sure the edges are aligned neatly.
    • Create a Smaller Rectangle: Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, ensuring the edges line up once more to form a more compact rectangle.
    • Initiate Triangular Folds: Starting from the hoist (left) side, take the bottom corner of the rectangle and fold it diagonally to meet the top edge, creating a triangle.
    • Continue with Triangular Folds: Repeat the process by folding the new bottom edge upwards towards the top edge, forming another triangle.
    • Keep Folding Until Compact: Continue this folding method, alternating directions, until the entire flag is transformed into a compact triangle.
    • Secure the Folded Flag: Once fully folded, tuck in any loose fabric to keep the flag neat and secure.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely attached and can move freely while displayed.
    • Flag Exposure: To extend the life of the flag, take it down during severe weather or in the evening to minimise exposure to harsh elements.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If you notice fraying or wear, replace the flag with a spare and have the damaged flag repaired by a professional seamstress.
    • Replacement: As the flag nears the end of its lifespan, consider purchasing a new one to ensure you always have a fresh flag for important occasions.

Flying the Kenya Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Start by ensuring the flagpole is clean and free of any obstructions.
    • Header with Loops: When opting for the header with loops, easily slide the loops onto the pole and fasten them securely with sister clips to keep the flag firmly in place.
    • Vertical Sleeve: With the vertical sleeve option, lower the flag onto the flagpole until the top of the sleeve aligns with the top of the pole, ensuring a snug fit.
    • Gradually raise the flag, making sure it does not touch the ground. Once fully raised, ensure it is taut and clearly visible to all.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When hoisting the Kenyan flag on a vertical flagpole, it should be displayed with the black stripe at the top and the coat of arms facing the observer. This arrangement guarantees that the flag’s symbols and colours are presented accurately.
    • The Kenya flag should be prominently displayed at eye level or higher, either on a flagpole or at the forefront of buildings.
    • If displaying multiple flags, position the Kenyan flag at the same height or above the others, and ensure it is the first flag displayed on the left when viewed from the front.
    • Avoid positioning the flag in a manner that could cause it to come into contact with the ground or other objects.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole for a brief moment, then lower it to the halfway point.
    • This practice is typically observed during times of mourning or remembrance and should be conducted with respect and dignity.
    • Once the mourning period is over, raise the flag back to the top before lowering it completely.
  • Flag Etiquette at Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset to honour flag-flying traditions.
    • If illuminated during the night, it may remain hoisted, but it’s generally advisable to lower it overnight to maintain its condition.
  • Weather Considerations:
    • Avoid flying the flag in adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, as these can cause damage.
    • If severe weather is forecasted, take the flag down to protect it from wear and tear.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired in a respectful manner.
    • The appropriate method of retirement is to burn the flag in a dignified ceremony, ensuring it is treated with honour throughout the process.
    • Many communities organise retirement ceremonies for flags, so consider participating in such events to properly honour the flag.

By following these care instructions, you’ll help ensure that your Fully Sewn Kenya Flag remains vibrant, durable, and a symbol of pride for years to come. Proper care reflects the respect you have for your heritage and nation.
