To maintain the vibrant colours and quality of your Kenya flag, please adhere to the following care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always use a mild detergent to wash the flag, as this helps minimise fading. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals that may harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent any snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry, and safe place to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Kenya Flag:
    • Start with the Flag Face Down: Lay the Kenya flag flat on a clean surface with the design facing down to protect the colours and symbols.
    • Fold in Half Lengthwise: Bring the left edge of the flag over to meet the right edge, creating a long rectangle. Ensure the edges align neatly.
    • Create a Smaller Rectangle: Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, aligning the edges once more. This will result in a more compact rectangle.
    • Begin Triangular Folds: Starting from the hoist (left) side, take the bottom corner of the rectangle and fold it diagonally to the top edge, forming a triangle.
    • Continue Folding: Repeat the triangular folds by taking the new bottom edge and folding it upwards towards the top edge, creating another triangle.
    • Repeat Until Compact: Continue this folding pattern, alternating directions, until the entire flag is folded into a compact triangle.
    • Secure the Folded Flag: Once folded, tuck in any loose fabric to keep the flag neat and secure for storage.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that could lead to snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly fastened when displayed to prevent unnecessary stress on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during extreme weather or overnight to help preserve its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider taking the damaged flag to a professional seamstress for repair.
    • Replacement: If the flag exhibits significant wear, think about purchasing a new one to maintain its appearance during important events.

Flying the Kenya Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring that the flagpole is clean and free of any debris.
    • Header with Loops: If using the header with loops, simply slide the loops over the pole and secure them with sister clips to ensure the flag is firmly attached.
    • Vertical Sleeve: For the vertical sleeve option, slide the flag down onto the flagpole until the top of the sleeve reaches the top of the pole, ensuring it fits snugly.
    • Slowly raise the flag, ensuring it is not touching the ground. Once fully raised, ensure it is taut and visible for all to see.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • The Kenyan flag should be flown with the black stripe at the top when hoisted on a vertical flagpole and with the coat of arms facing the viewer. This ensures that the flag’s symbols and colours are represented correctly.
    • The Kenya flag should be displayed prominently, ideally at eye level or higher, on a flagpole or at the front of buildings.
    • If flying multiple flags, ensure the Kenyan flag is positioned at the same height or higher than others and is the first flag displayed on the left when viewed from the front.
    • Avoid flying the flag in a position that might cause it to touch the ground or any other objects.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole briefly, then lower it to the halfway point.
    • This gesture is typically done during periods of mourning or remembrance and should be done with respect and dignity.
    • When the mourning period concludes, raise the flag back to the top before lowering it completely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset to honour the tradition of flag flying.
    • If illuminated at night, it may remain hoisted after dark, but it is best to lower it during the night to preserve its integrity.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag during severe weather conditions, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, as this can cause damage.
    • If severe weather is anticipated, take the flag down to protect it and avoid wear and tear.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag is worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The proper method of retirement involves burning the flag in a dignified ceremony, ensuring that it is treated with respect throughout the process.
    • Many communities offer organised retirement ceremonies for flags, so consider participating in such events to honour the flag appropriately.

By following these care instructions, your flag will remain vibrant and in excellent condition for years to come. Caring for your flag is essential not only for preservation but also as a tribute to the pride and heritage it represents.
