- Cleaning:
- Gentle Washing: Use a soft detergent and avoid harsh chemicals or bleach to prevent discolouration.
- Machine Wash: If using a washing machine, select a delicate cycle with cold water. Place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to protect it from damage.
- Air Drying: Always air dry your flag by hanging it or laying it flat. Avoid using a tumble dryer, as heat can affect the material's shape and texture.
- Storage:
- Proper Storage: Only store the flag when it’s completely dry. Place it in a cool, dry place to prevent mould and moisture damage.
- Folding the United Arab Emirates Flag:
- Begin by laying the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface and the colours are facing upwards.
- Fold the flag lengthwise from the right side over to the left, aligning the edges neatly.
- Next, fold it lengthwise again from the left over to the right, keeping the red portion on the outside to showcase the vibrant colours.
- Start folding the flag into a triangle shape from the bottom, folding the bottom edge up diagonally towards the hoist side (where the flagpole attaches).
- Continue folding the flag in a triangular pattern, neatly aligning each fold with the previous one.
- As you approach the top, make sure the folds are tight and the flag remains compact, with no wrinkles or slack.
- Once you reach the top, tuck any remaining fabric securely into the final fold, fully containing the flag and retaining a tidy, rectangular shape for storage.
- Handling:
- Avoid Sharp Objects: Avoid contact with sharp edges or abrasive surfaces that could snag or tear the fabric.
- Secure Installation: Fasten the flag firmly to prevent it from flapping excessively in strong winds.
- Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during storms, high winds, or at night to extend its lifespan.
- Repairs:
- Minor Repairs: For minor damage, remove the flag and have it mended by a professional tailor.
- Replacement: If the flag is significantly worn or torn, consider replacing it for continued respectful display.
Flying the United Arab Emirates Flag:
- Raising the Flag:
- Using Header with Loops: Attach the reinforced loops to the halyard using the included sister clips. Secure the clips tightly before hoisting the flag to avoid tangling or slipping.
- Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag's side pocket over the pole until it is fully extended. Use the loop at the base (if provided) to tie it down and keep it stable in the wind.
- Raise the flag briskly and with confidence as a sign of respect.
- Hoist the flag where the red vertical stripe is nearest the flagpole, with the green, white, and black stripes positioned horizontally from top to bottom.
- It should always be raised higher than other flags when flown with non-national banners.
- Displaying the Flag:
- The UAE flag must always be flown in a position of prominence and should never touch the ground or any object below it.
- When displayed against a wall, the red stripe should be on the viewer's left. If hung vertically, the red band should remain at the top, to the viewer's left.
- It should never be used as a drapery or for decorative purposes in a disrespectful manner.
- Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
- To lower the flag to half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole briefly before slowly bringing it down to the half-mast position.
- The midpoint of the flag should be halfway down the pole to signify mourning.
- When taking it down, it must be raised to the top again before being fully lowered.
- Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
- The flag should be hoisted at sunrise and lowered at sunset unless it is properly illuminated for night display.
- During lowering, it should be taken down slowly and respectfully, never allowed to touch the ground.
- Observers should stand still and face the flag, removing hats or placing a hand on their heart if appropriate.
- Weather Conditions:
- Do not fly the flag in severe weather such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, as this can cause wear and damage.
- If adverse weather is expected, the flag should be taken down and stored safely to preserve its condition.
- Retirement of the Flag:
- When the flag becomes worn, faded, or torn, it should be retired in a respectful manner.
- The proper method is to dispose of it privately, ideally by cutting it into pieces so it is no longer recognisable, then recycling or disposing of the fabric responsibly.
- Never discard the flag casually or allow it to become a public eyesore.
