For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:

    • Gentle Washing: Use mild detergent to prevent fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that may damage the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If necessary, wash on a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to avoid snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Do not tumble dry, as high heat can shrink or weaken the fabric.
  2. Storage:

    • Proper Storage: Dry the flag completely before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage and mould.
  3. Folding the Tanzania Flag:

    • Lay Flat on a Clean Surface: Fully extend the flag with no wrinkles, on a dry, clean, and flat surface.
    • Fold Lengthwise Once: Bring the green and blue sections together so that the flag forms a long, narrow rectangle.
    • Align the Stripes: Make sure the black diagonal stripe remains visible, running across the centre, bordered by thin gold edges.
    • Fold Lengthwise Again: Bring the folded edge up to meet the top edge, maintaining the black stripe’s central position.
    • Create a Compact Shape: Begin folding the flag into equal sections, working from one end to the other, ensuring the colours remain aligned.
    • Final Fold for Storage: Once reduced to a neat rectangular shape, smooth out any creases and make sure no edges are exposed.
    • Store Properly: Place in a protective cover or flag storage box to keep it free from dust, moisture, and light damage.
  4. Handling:

    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep away from rough surfaces or sharp edges that could cause tears or fraying.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during extreme weather conditions or overnight to extend its lifespan.
  5. Repairs:

    • Minor Repairs: If small tears occur, consider professional stitching to extend the flag’s usability.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows extensive wear, replace it to maintain a professional and dignified display.

Flying the Tanzania Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:

    • Using the Header with Loops: Secure the flag’s reinforced loops to the flagpole’s clips, ensuring a firm attachment before hoisting it smoothly.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flagpole through the sleeve, making sure it fits snugly, then carefully raise it to full height.
    • Always hoist the Tanzania flag briskly and with dignity, handling it respectfully.
    • If raising alongside other flags, the Tanzania flag should be hoisted first and lowered last.
    • When raising the flag in an official ceremony, it is customary to accompany it with the national anthem.
  • Displaying the Flag:

    • The Tanzania flag should always be in a position of honour, placed at the highest point when flown with other banners.
    • When displayed indoors, it should be positioned prominently on a wall, ensuring it is fully spread and not draped over furniture or objects.
    • If hung, the green field should be on the left with the black diagonal stripe running from the top right to the bottom left.
    • The flag must never touch the ground, floor, or be used as a covering for tables or podiums.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:

    • To lower the Tanzania flag to half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole before lowering it to the halfway point.
    • When lowering the flag at the end of the day, it must first be returned to full height before being taken down.
    • Flying the flag at half-mast is a sign of mourning and should be done only on government-declared occasions or national days of remembrance.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:

    • The Tanzania flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, never fly the flag in darkness unless properly illuminated.
    • If flown 24/7, a light source should be positioned to keep the flag visible at all times.
    • During lowering, the flag must be taken down respectfully, folded neatly, and stored properly.
  • Weather Conditions:

    • The flag should not be flown during extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms to prevent damage.
    • If bad weather arises, lower and store the flag in a dry place until conditions improve.
    • Regularly inspect the flag for wear and tear due to sun exposure and wind.
  • Retirement of the Flag:

    • A Tanzania flag that has become excessively worn, torn, or faded should be replaced with a new one.
    • When retiring a flag, it should be disposed of in a dignified manner, preferably by burning in a private and respectful setting.
    • If burning is not possible, consider donating the flag to a relevant organisation that handles proper flag retirement.
    • Never discard a flag in general waste or in a manner that may be deemed disrespectful.

By following these care instructions, your flag will maintain its bold colours and strong fabric for years to come. Proper care ensures the flag continues to represent national pride with the respect it deserves.
