To maintain the vibrant colours and durability of your flag, follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:

    • Gentle Washing: Use mild detergent and lukewarm water to prevent colour fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
    • Machine Wash: If using a washing machine, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to reduce the risk of snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Do not use a tumble dryer, as excessive heat may damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:

    • Proper Storage: Dry the flag completely before folding and storing it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture-related damage.
  3. Folding the Taiwan Flag:

    • Lay the Flag Flat: Place the flag on a clean, dry surface with the blue canton (featuring the white sun) positioned at the top left. Smooth out any wrinkles.

    • First Lengthwise Fold: Bring the bottom edge of the flag up to meet the top edge, with the design still visible. Press along the fold to keep it neat.

    • Second Lengthwise Fold: Fold it lengthwise again in the same manner, maintaining alignment so the flag remains evenly structured. At this stage, the blue canton with the white sun should still be visible.

    • Begin Compact Folding: Starting from the red section opposite the blue canton, fold the flag in small, even rectangles towards the blue field.

    • Final Fold: Continue folding until only the blue canton with the white sun is displayed on the top layer for a respectful and organised appearance.

    • Store or Display Properly: Once folded, store the flag in a dry, safe place or prepare it for ceremonial presentation. Avoid placing heavy objects on top to prevent creasing.

  4. Handling:

    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from rough surfaces or sharp edges to prevent snags and tears.
    • Secure Installation: Attach the flag firmly to avoid unnecessary stress on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: To prolong its lifespan, bring the flag down during extreme weather conditions or overnight.
  5. Repairs:

    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider having the flag repaired by a professional seamstress.
    • Replacement: If the flag becomes significantly worn or faded, replacing it ensures your display remains dignified and professional.

Flying the Taiwan Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:

    • Ensure the flag is in excellent condition, free from damage or excessive wear.
    • Header with Loops: Hook the reinforced loops onto the halyard clips, ensuring a firm and stable connection before raising the flag.
    • Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flagpole through the sleeve, making sure it fits securely, and raise it steadily to prevent creases or folds.
    • Raise the flag briskly and with respect, reaching the top of the flagpole without pausing.
    • If a formal ceremony is being conducted, the flag should be accompanied by the national anthem or a moment of silence.
  • Displaying the Flag:

    • The flag should always be displayed in a position of prominence, ideally on the highest flagpole when flown alongside other flags.
    • When hung vertically, the blue canton with the white sun must be positioned at the top left from the observer’s point of view.
    • If displayed indoors, it should be mounted on a pole standing upright or placed against a wall with the blue canton in the upper left.
    • In public gatherings or events, the flag should be placed in a dignified location, ensuring it is not obstructed or touching the ground.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:

    • The Taiwan flag is flown at half-mast as a sign of national mourning or during significant solemn occasions.
    • To lower the flag to half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole briefly before lowering it to the halfway position.
    • Before fully lowering the flag at the end of the day, it must first be raised to the top again before being brought down completely.
    • Follow official government announcements for designated mourning periods and half-mast protocol.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:

    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset unless illuminated properly at night.
    • When lowering the flag, do so slowly and respectfully, ensuring it does not touch the ground.
    • If the flag is flown continuously overnight, proper lighting should be used to keep it clearly visible in the dark.
    • In ceremonies, those present should stand at attention and show respect while the flag is being raised or lowered.
  • Weather Conditions:

    • The flag should not be flown during extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, or typhoons to prevent damage.
    • If inclement weather occurs unexpectedly while the flag is displayed, it should be taken down and stored properly.
    • For long-term outdoor display, the flag should be made of weather-resistant material to withstand various conditions.
  • Retirement of the Flag:

    • When the flag becomes faded, torn, or unfit for display, it should be retired respectfully and not simply discarded.
    • The preferred method of retirement is burning the flag in a dignified manner, following proper ceremonial procedures.
    • If burning is not possible, the flag should be carefully folded and disposed of in a respectful manner, such as burial in a clean cloth.
    • Organisations or local authorities may conduct official flag retirement ceremonies—consider reaching out for guidance.

By following these care and handling guidelines, your Taiwan flag will remain a vibrant and lasting symbol of pride.
