To keep your flag looking vibrant and in excellent condition, follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to protect the colours and fabric. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could cause fading.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Do not use a tumble dryer, as heat may cause shrinkage or damage the material.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Dry the flag completely before folding and storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage and discolouration.
  3. Folding the Suriname Flag:
    • Lay the Flag Flat: Place the flag on a clean, flat surface with the design facing up. Ensure there are no creases or wrinkles.

    • First Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the top green stripe down to meet the bottom green stripe. The red stripe and yellow star should remain visible in the centre.

    • Second Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, aligning the edges so that the design remains balanced and central for a neat, compact shape.

    • Begin Compact Folding: Starting from one side, fold the flag in small, even sections or create a rectangular fold, depending on storage preference.

    • Final Folding for Storage: Continue folding until the flag forms a compact, easy-to-store rectangle. The red stripe and yellow star should remain visible on the top layer if possible, signifying the flag’s emblematic importance.

    • Store in a Safe Place: Place the folded flag in a protective case or a dry, cool location to prevent creasing, dust accumulation, or moisture damage.

  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from rough surfaces or sharp items that may cause tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached to prevent damage from strong winds.
    • Minimise Exposure: For prolonged durability, take the flag down during extreme weather or overnight.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If the flag develops small tears or fraying, have it professionally repaired to extend its lifespan.
    • Replacement: When the flag becomes significantly worn, consider replacing it to maintain a presentable display.

Flying the Suriname Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Before raising the flag, make sure it is in good condition, free from damage or fading.
    • Header with Loops: Use the reinforced loops to attach the flag to the halyard with sister clips, ensuring a firm and secure hold before hoisting.
    • Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flagpole through the sleeve opening until it is fully in place. Position the flag correctly before securing the pole.
    • Hoist the flag briskly and smoothly to the top of the flagpole to signify pride and respect.
    • Once raised, make sure the flag is flying freely and not obstructed by surrounding objects.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • The Suriname flag should always be displayed in a position of prominence, whether indoors or outdoors.
    • When mounted on a wall, the flag should be hung flat with the yellow star upright and centred.
    • If displayed alongside other national flags, the Suriname flag should be at the same height and in the correct order of precedence.
    • When displayed vertically, the green stripes should remain on the sides, with the red stripe and yellow star correctly oriented.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
    • Lowering the flag to half-mast is a sign of mourning or respect for national events.
    • To fly at half-mast, first hoist the flag to the top of the pole before slowly lowering it to the midway position.
    • The flag should still be fully visible and not touch any objects or the ground.
    • When lowering the flag at the end of the day, briefly raise it to full mast before bringing it down completely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Suriname flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset unless properly illuminated at night.
    • If the flag is flown after dark, make sure it is lit with a spotlight to maintain its visibility and honour.
    • When lowering the flag, do so slowly and with care, folding it properly for storage.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag in extreme weather, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, to prevent damage.
    • If the flag becomes wet, allow it to air dry completely before storing it to avoid mildew or fading.
    • For durability, regularly check the flag for wear and tear, especially along the edges.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • A flag that is torn, faded, or excessively worn should be retired respectfully and replaced.
    • Do not discard the flag in the trash. Instead, consider burning it in a dignified manner or repurposing the fabric.
    • Some organisations conduct flag retirement ceremonies—check with local authorities for appropriate disposal methods.

By following these care instructions, your flag will maintain its brilliance and last for years. Proper maintenance ensures you can proudly display your national symbol with respect and dignity.
