To maintain the flag’s durability and vivid colours, follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent when washing your flag to protect its colours. Avoid bleach or strong chemicals that could cause fading.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Placing the flag in a mesh laundry bag will help prevent snags.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Avoid using a tumble dryer, as high heat may cause shrinking or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: The flag should be completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage and mildew.
  3. Folding the South Africa Flag:
    • Lay the Flag Flat: Place the flag on a clean, dry surface with the design facing upward for proper alignment during folding.
    • Fold Lengthwise: Bring the bottom edge up to meet the top edge, the colours should remain visible and aligned.
    • Fold Again Lengthwise: Repeat the previous step, folding the flag once more along its length, keeping the central design intact.
    • Create a Compact Rectangle: Fold the flag inward from both sides until it forms a neat rectangular shape. The flag’s proportions should remain balanced.
    • Smooth Out Any Creases: Gently press down on the folded flag to remove any wrinkles, ensuring a crisp, professional appearance.
    • Store with Care: Keep the folded flag in a dry, cool location, away from direct sunlight or moisture, to preserve its vibrant colours and fabric quality.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from rough surfaces or sharp items that may cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: The flag should be properly fastened when displayed to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: To extend its lifespan, bring the flag indoors during extreme weather or overnight.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: If small tears or fraying occur, have the flag professionally repaired or replaced.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear, consider purchasing a new one to keep it looking its best for special occasions.

Flying the South Africa Flag:

  • Raising the Flag
    • Header with Loops: Attach the flag’s reinforced loops to the flagpole using sister clips, ensuring a secure hold before raising it.
    • Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag over the pole through the side pocket, making sure it fits snugly and remains upright.
    • Hoist the flag briskly and smoothly to symbolise strength and unity.
    • The flag should be fully unfurled and not tangled in the halyard before securing it.
    • When raising multiple flags, the South African flag should be hoisted first and lowered last.
  • Displaying the Flag
    • The flag must always be flown with the black triangle on the hoist side and the red band at the top.
    • If displayed indoors, position the flag against a wall with the black triangle on the left.
    • When draped over a casket, the black triangle should be at the head, and the flag should never touch the ground.
    • On a flagpole with multiple national flags, the South African flag should be of equal size and flown at the same height as other national flags.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast
    • To indicate mourning, raise the flag to the top first, then lower it to a position one-third from the top.
    • When lowering at the end of the day, raise it back to full height before bringing it down completely.
    • Follow official government directives for half-mast periods during national mourning.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset
    • The flag should be hoisted at sunrise and lowered at sunset unless illuminated by a dedicated light source.
    • If flown at night, the flag should be well-lit and displayed with dignity.
    • During official ceremonies, standing at attention while the flag is raised or lowered is a sign of respect.
  • Weather Conditions
    • Avoid flying the flag during heavy rain, strong winds, or storms to prevent damage.
    • If the flag gets wet, allow it to dry completely before storage to prevent fabric deterioration.
    • Regularly inspect the flag for wear and replace it when signs of fraying or fading appear.
  • Retirement of the Flag
    • When a flag becomes too worn or damaged to be displayed respectfully, it should be retired properly.
    • The preferred method of retirement is by burning it in a dignified manner, following local regulations.
    • If burning is not possible, cut the flag into unrecognisable pieces before disposal.
    • A replacement flag should be hoisted promptly to continue displaying national pride.

By following these care instructions, your flag will maintain its brilliant colours and remain in excellent condition for years to come. Taking care of your flag is a sign of respect for the heritage and pride it represents.
