For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the São Tomé and Príncipe flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always wash the flag with a mild detergent to minimise fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, choose a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat may shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep the flag in a cool, dry, and safe location to avoid moisture damage.
  3. Folding the São Tomé and Príncipe Flag:
    • Lay the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface, ensuring the front is facing up.
    • Fold the flag lengthwise in half, bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge. Ensure the edges are aligned neatly, with the flag’s design facing inward.
    • Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, reducing the size further. Smooth out any wrinkles or creases as you go to maintain the flag’s shape.
    • Begin folding the flag widthwise by bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge, creating a compact, rectangular shape. Ensure the folds are even and aligned for a neat finish.
    • Continue folding until the flag is small enough for storage or display. If necessary, you can fold it one more time to achieve the desired size.
    • Store the folded flag in a protective bag or case to prevent dust, dirt, or damage.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that may cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely fastened when displayed, preventing unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Bring the flag down during extreme weather or overnight to preserve its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider repairing the flag yourself or take it to a professional seamstress for restoration.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear, it may be time to replace it to maintain its appearance during important occasions.

Flying the São Tomé and Príncipe Flag:

  • Raising the Flag
    • Ensure the flag is clean and free of any damage before raising it.
    • Header with Loops: Attach the reinforced loops at the top of the flag to the flagpole using clips or ropes. Ensure the flag is centred and hanging freely from the loops, allowing it to unfurl completely as it rises.
    • Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring the pole fits snugly within the sleeve. Align the flag so that the red triangle is positioned to the left.
    • Raise the flag briskly, ensuring it is fully unfurled and visible. The flag should be flown high enough to allow for easy visibility from a distance.
  • Displaying the Flag
    • When displayed horizontally, the red triangle should be positioned in the left.
    • For vertical displays, the red triangle should be on the top.
    • Ensure the flag is not touching the ground and remains fully visible. It should be displayed with dignity and respect, symbolising the pride of São Tomé and Príncipe.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast
    • The flag should be flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning or respect for a national tragedy or loss.
    • To lower the flag to half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole, then lower it to the halfway point.
    • When the flag is ready to be raised again, first lower it back to half-mast and then raise it fully to the top.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, ensuring it is never flown after dark unless it is properly illuminated.
    • If the flag is to be flown overnight, it must be illuminated by a light source to ensure it is visible at all times.
  • Weather Conditions
    • Avoid flying the flag in extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain or high winds, as these can damage the fabric.
    • In stormy weather, it is best to lower the flag to prevent wear and tear. If the flag is flown in these conditions, ensure it is made from durable, weather-resistant material.
  • Retirement of the Flag
    • When the flag becomes worn, torn, or faded beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The flag can be retired by carefully folding it and either burning it in a dignified manner or burying it, following the proper customs of São Tomé and Príncipe.
    • It is important to treat the retired flag with the same respect as when it was flown.

By following these guidelines, your flag will retain its vibrant colours and remain in top condition for many years. Taking care of your flag is not just about preservation but also about honouring the pride and heritage it represents.
