For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Samoa flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always wash the flag with a mild detergent to minimise fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Store it in a cool, dry place away from moisture to prevent any damage.
  3. Folding the Samoa Flag:
    • Start by laying the flag flat on a clean surface with the front (design side) facing up.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the top and bottom edges neatly.
    • Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, ensuring the edges are aligned and the flag is now a long, narrow rectangle.
    • Carefully fold the flag into thirds, starting from the fly end (the side opposite the flagpole). Ensure each fold is even to maintain the flag’s shape.
    • Continue folding until the flag forms a neat, compact rectangle with the red field and the blue canton (with the stars) visible on top.
    • If storing the flag, ensure it is fully dry before folding to prevent moisture damage.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly fastened when displayed to avoid unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during extreme weather conditions or overnight to preserve its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider taking the flag to a professional seamstress for repair.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear, it’s best to replace it to maintain its appearance during important occasions.

Flying the Samoa Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Using the Header with Loops: Attach the reinforced loops at the top of the flag to the flagpole’s hook or cleat. Ensure the flag is securely fastened with the sister clips, allowing it to be raised smoothly without any risk of detachment.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring the flag is positioned correctly with the blue field at the top left. Secure the sleeve at the top of the pole, making sure it is snug.
    • As you raise the flag, do so briskly and with respect, allowing it to unfurl fully. Ensure that the flag is not tangled or caught.
    • The flag should always be raised with the blue field at the top left corner, which represents the national symbol of Samoa.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displayed horizontally, the flag should be positioned so that the blue field (with the stars) is on the left side.
    • If the flag is displayed vertically, the blue canton should always be at the top right, ensuring the flag’s symbolism is correctly represented.
    • The flag should be displayed prominently during national celebrations, public events, and Samoan holidays to honour the nation’s heritage.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the Samoa flag at half-mast, raise the flag to the top of the pole first, then lower it to the halfway point.
    • The flag should be raised to full mast again before being lowered for the day.
    • Flying the flag at half-mast is a sign of respect during times of mourning, such as national days of remembrance or following the death of a prominent leader.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, following the daily cycle.
    • Ensure the flag is raised briskly in the morning and lowered slowly at sunset, taking care to fold it properly for storage.
    • If the flag is displayed overnight, it should be illuminated by a light source to ensure it remains visible and is treated with respect.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • The Samoa flag should be taken down during severe weather conditions, such as storms, high winds, or heavy rain, to prevent damage to the fabric.
    • It is advisable to store the flag in a dry, safe place during extreme weather to avoid wear and tear.
    • Flags should not be flown in windy conditions that could cause the fabric to fray or tear.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Samoa flag becomes worn, torn, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired with dignity.
    • The flag should be respectfully folded before being disposed of. If possible, it should be burned in a ceremonial manner, symbolising the respectful retirement of the flag.
    • Alternatively, the flag can be handed to a local Samoan community group or government body for proper disposal.

By following these guidelines, your flag will retain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for many years. Proper care not only preserves the flag but also honours the pride and heritage it represents.
