Proudly Showcase Saint Helena’s Heritage with Our Knitted Polyester Saint Helena Flag

Saint Helena is a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, known for its stunning landscapes and as the final place of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile. The island is celebrated for its unique wildlife, historical significance, and the hospitality of its people. Our Knitted Polyester Saint Helena Flag embodies the spirit of the island, offering a vibrant way to proudly display your connection to this unique territory.

The Saint Helena Flag:

The elements of the Saint Helena flag are rich in meaning:
  • Union Jack: Represents Saint Helena’s status as a British Overseas Territory, reflecting its historical ties to the United Kingdom.
  • Saint Helena Coat of Arms: Positioned to the right of the Union Jack, this emblem features:
    • The Plover: Also known as the wirebird is the island’s national bird. The wirebird is the only endemic bird species left on the island.
    • Saint George’s Cross: The Cross of Saint George is a symbol of the Kingdom of England, Saint Helena’s mother country.
    • The Coastal Scene: The bottom two thirds of the shield depict a coastal scene of the island, including the ship and the mountainous island to the left

Available Finishes:

For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Saint Helena flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always wash the flag using a mild detergent to prevent fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage the fabric and colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, use a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to avoid snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat may shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Store the flag in a cool, dry, and safe location to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Saint Helena Flag:
    • Begin by laying the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface, ensuring it is free of wrinkles.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise with the design (emblem) facing inward, aligning the edges neatly.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise again, ensuring the edges are aligned and the flag becomes narrower.
    • Starting from the hoist side (the side closest to the flagpole), begin folding the flag into a triangle shape by folding one corner over to the opposite edge, forming a triangle.
    • Continue folding the flag in this triangular manner, keeping the folds tight and even, until the entire flag is folded into a compact triangle.
    • Tuck the remaining fabric into the final fold to secure the flag in its folded state.
    • Store the folded flag in a safe, dry location, ensuring it remains free from any sharp objects or moisture that could damage it.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is securely attached when displayed, to prevent strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Remove the flag during extreme weather or overnight to maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and taking the damaged one to a professional seamstress for repair.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant wear, it may be time to replace it to maintain its appearance for important events.

Flying the Saint Helena Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Ensure the flag is properly folded and free of any wrinkles before raising it.
    • Using the Header with Loops: If your flag has a header with loops, securely attach the reinforced loops to the flagpole using sister clips. Ensure the flag is fastened tightly so that it hangs freely without obstruction.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: For flags with a vertical sleeve, slide the sleeve over the flagpole. Ensure the flag is positioned properly, with the emblem facing outward, and that the sleeve fits snugly on the pole to prevent the flag from shifting or tangling.
    • Raise the flag briskly and evenly to the top of the pole, ensuring it is taut and not tangled. Do not allow the flag to touch the ground during this process.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displaying the flag, ensure the Saint Helena emblem is positioned correctly, with the flag’s design facing outward and visible to all.
    • The flag should be flown with respect and pride, positioned so that it is clearly visible to the public.
    • If displaying multiple flags, ensure the Saint Helena Flag is flown at the same height or slightly above other flags, in accordance with flag protocol.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise the flag to the top of the pole, then lower it to the halfway point.
    • Ensure the flag remains in a secure and stable position at half-mast, and ensure it does not touch the ground.
    • Flying the flag at half-mast is a symbol of mourning or respect, typically observed during national periods of remembrance or when a national leader passes away.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and taken down at sunset, ensuring it is always flown during daylight hours.
    • If the flag is illuminated at night, it can be flown overnight, but it must be properly lit to maintain its visibility.
    • If you are not able to take the flag down at sunset, consider using an automatic light to ensure it remains visible and respectful throughout the night.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag during severe weather conditions, such as heavy rain or high winds, as this can cause damage to the fabric.
    • If the weather is particularly harsh, it is best to take the flag down to protect it from unnecessary wear and tear.
    • During calm weather, the flag can be flown confidently, as it is designed to withstand outdoor conditions, but always ensure it is securely fastened to prevent any damage.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Saint Helena Flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The flag can be retired by burning it in a respectful manner, or by cutting it into pieces and discarding it in a dignified way.
    • It is important to handle the retirement process with care, as the flag represents the pride and heritage of the nation.

By following these care instructions, your flag will retain its vibrant colours and stay in excellent condition for years to come. Taking care of your flag is a way of preserving the pride and heritage it represents.
