To maintain the flag’s vibrant colours and long-lasting quality, please follow these care instructions carefully:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent when washing your flag to help preserve its bright colours. Stay away from bleach or harsh chemicals that could weaken the fabric or cause fading.
    • Machine Wash: If you choose to machine wash, select a gentle cycle with cold water and place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snags.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry naturally. Avoid using a tumble dryer, as high heat can shrink the fabric or affect its colour.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Make sure your flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from damp areas to protect it from mould and moisture.
  3. Folding the Republic of the Congo Flag:
    • Find a clean, flat surface and spread the flag out fully with the front side facing down.
    • Smooth out any wrinkles so the fabric lies flat and the colours are clearly visible.
    • Fold the flag lengthwise in half, bringing the top edge down to meet the bottom edge while keeping the colours aligned.
    • Fold it lengthwise once more so the flag becomes a long, narrow strip with the green field still visible at one end.
    • Starting from the fly end (the side opposite the green triangle at the hoist), fold one corner over to form a triangle.
    • Continue folding the strip into a series of tight, neat triangles, working toward the hoist end with the green section.
    • Tuck any remaining fabric neatly into the last fold to secure it and keep the triangles from unravelling.
    • Place the folded flag in a protective cloth bag or box to keep it clean and safe when not in use.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from rough or sharp surfaces that could cause tears or snags.
    • Secure Installation: Attach the flag properly when flying it to avoid unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Bring your flag down during storms or harsh weather and overnight to help prolong its lifespan.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small rips or frayed edges, take the flag to a professional to have it stitched and restored.
    • Replacement: If the flag becomes too worn or faded, consider replacing it to maintain a respectful and striking display.

Flying the Republic of the Congo Flag:

  • Raising the Flag
    • Use the header with loops by fastening the sister clips to the loops for a firm hold on the halyard. For the vertical sleeve, slide the pole through the sleeve pocket until the flag sits evenly, then secure it at the base to keep it upright.
    • Before raising, check that the flag is attached securely and that the halyard or rope is untangled to prevent twisting.
    • Hoist the Republic of the Congo flag briskly to the top of the flagpole as a sign of respect.
    • Always lift the flag smoothly without letting it touch the ground.
  • Displaying the Flag
    • The flag should be flown in a prominent position where it can move freely and be clearly visible.
    • The diagonal yellow stripe should run from the lower hoist side to the upper fly side, with the green triangle at the top hoist corner and the red triangle at the bottom fly corner.
    • When displayed with other national flags, place the Republic of the Congo flag in the position of honour, typically to the left when facing an audience or at the centre if flown among multiple flags.
    • Indoors, mount the flag so it hangs cleanly without creases and does not touch walls or furniture unnecessarily.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast
    • To fly the Republic of the Congo flag at half-mast, first raise it fully to the top of the pole for a moment of respect.
    • Lower it slowly to a position halfway down the pole.
    • Before taking it down, raise it to the top again momentarily before lowering it completely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset
    • The flag should ideally be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset when flown outdoors.
    • If displayed at night, the flag should be well-lit so it remains clearly visible in the dark.
    • Bring the flag down carefully at sunset if proper lighting is not available.
  • Weather Conditions
    • Avoid flying the flag during severe weather such as strong winds, storms or heavy rain to protect it from damage.
    • Bring the flag indoors if there is any risk of harsh weather to help extend its lifespan.
  • Retirement of the Flag
    • When the flag becomes too worn, torn or faded to display respectfully, retire it properly by removing it from use.
    • If possible, cut the flag into smaller pieces to prevent misuse and dispose of it discreetly and respectfully.
    • Consider replacing it with a new flag to continue flying the Republic of the Congo colours with pride.

By following these simple care steps, your flag will keep its vivid colours and stay in excellent condition for years to come. Caring for your flag is a meaningful way to show respect for what it stands for and the pride it represents.
