For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean your flag and minimise colour fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snags.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat may shrink or damage the material.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Store it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Philippines Flag:
    • Lay the flag flat: Begin by spreading the flag out on a clean, flat surface, ensuring the design is facing upwards.
    • Fold lengthwise: Gently fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the edges neatly. The sun (the white triangle) should remain visible on the outside.
    • Fold in half again: Fold the flag once more lengthwise, ensuring the edges stay aligned. This should reduce the flag’s width while keeping the design facing outward.
    • Create a triangle: Start at the hoist side (the side with the loops or sleeve) and fold the flag diagonally into a triangle. Continue folding the triangle over itself, maintaining neat, even folds.
    • Tuck the end: Once the flag is folded into a compact triangle, tuck the remaining end into the fold to secure the flag neatly in place.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely attached when displayed, to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Bring the flag down during extreme weather conditions or overnight to preserve its quality.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and take the damaged one to a professional for repairs.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant wear, it’s time to purchase a new one to ensure it remains vibrant and presentable for important events.

Flying the Philippines Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Using Header with Loops: Secure the flag’s reinforced loops to the flagpole using the sister clips or ropes. Ensure the loops are evenly spaced and tightly secured to prevent the flag from shifting in the wind.
    • Using Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve over the top of the flagpole. Ensure the sleeve fits snugly around the pole to prevent the flag from slipping.
    • When raising the flag, ensure it is done slowly and respectfully.
    • The flag should be raised to the top of the pole, with the red stripe at the bottom when the flag is fully hoisted.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • If the flag is displayed with other flags, the Philippines flag should be in the position of honour—on the far right or at the highest point if multiple flags are flown together.
    • When displayed indoors, the flag should be placed in a prominent position, ensuring the sun and triangle remain upright.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • The Philippines flag is flown at half-mast to mourn the death of a prominent leader or in national periods of mourning.
    • To lower the flag to half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole and then slowly lower it to the halfway point.
    • When the mourning period is over, raise the flag back to full height as a symbol of hope and recovery.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. If the flag is to remain displayed overnight, it must be illuminated by proper lighting.
    • During sunrise, the flag should be raised briskly to full height, and at sunset, it should be lowered slowly and with respect.
    • If the flag is flown continuously, it must be taken down at night unless it is properly illuminated.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • The flag should not be flown during inclement weather such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, as these conditions can damage the fabric.
    • If the weather is expected to be harsh, it is best to lower the flag and store it safely until conditions improve.
    • Always inspect the flag for any wear or tear after exposure to adverse weather and replace it if necessary to maintain its dignity.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag becomes worn, torn, or faded beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The proper method of flag retirement is to burn it in a dignified ceremony, ensuring the flag is completely destroyed in a manner that preserves its honour.
    • Alternatively, you can contact local organisations that specialise in flag retirement ceremonies to ensure the flag is disposed of with the utmost respect.

By following these care instructions, your flag will retain its vivid colours and remain in excellent condition for years to come. Caring for your flag is a way of preserving the pride and heritage it represents.
