  • Southern Cross Constellation: Found on the left side, this constellation links Papua New Guinea to its geographical location in the Southern Hemisphere and its historical ties to the Commonwealth of Australia.

For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Papua New Guinea flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag and avoid harsh chemicals like bleach, which can damage the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging or wear.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture-related damage.
  3. Folding the Papua New Guinea Flag:
    • Prepare the Flag: Lay the flag flat on a clean, dry surface with the design facing upwards. Ensure there are no wrinkles or folds to start with a smooth base.
    • First Lengthwise Fold: Bring the bottom edge of the flag up to meet the top edge, ensuring the black and red sections align evenly. Smooth out any creases as you fold.
    • Second Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag lengthwise again, bringing the folded edge up to meet the top edge, creating a narrow, even strip.
    • Align the Design: Ensure the Southern Cross stars and the Raggiana bird-of-paradise remain visible and aligned for a neat appearance.
    • Final Fold: Starting from the side opposite the sleeve or loops, fold the flag into equal sections, forming a compact rectangle. Adjust the folds to ensure the flag is neat and secure.
    • Store Properly: Place the folded flag in a protective cover or a clean, dry space to prevent dust or damage.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp edges or rough surfaces that could tear or snag the fabric.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly fastened to prevent undue strain or damage when displayed.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during harsh weather or overnight to maintain its quality and appearance.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or frayed edges, seek assistance from a professional seamstress to restore the flag.
    • Replacement: If the flag becomes significantly worn or damaged, consider replacing it to uphold its symbolic value during important occasions.

Flying the Papua New Guinea Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Using the Header with Loops: Attach the reinforced loops at the top of the flag to the flagpole or rope using the sister clips, ensuring the flag is securely fastened before raising it.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring it fits snugly and aligns with the top of the pole. Secure the flag in place before raising it.
    • Always raise the flag briskly, ensuring it does not touch the ground during the process.
    • The flag should be hoisted to the top of the flagpole, with the red triangle section at the top right when viewed from the front.
    • Ensure the flag is fully unfurled, with the Southern Cross stars and the Raggiana bird-of-paradise clearly visible and properly displayed.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displayed with other flags, the Papua New Guinea flag should be placed on the viewer’s left, or in a position of honour, ensuring it is not inferior to any other flag.
    • The flag should always be flown upright with the design facing forward, ensuring the proper orientation of the flag’s symbols.
    • When flown alongside national or other flags, ensure all flags are of similar size for uniformity.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • The flag should be flown at half-mast to honour a national day of mourning or to mark the passing of significant figures.
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole, then lower it halfway down the pole.
    • Once the event or mourning period is over, the flag should be raised back to the top of the pole before being lowered for the day.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Raise the flag at sunrise, ensuring it is fully unfurled and properly displayed.
    • At sunset, the flag should be taken down, unless it is illuminated overnight, in which case it can remain flying until dawn.
    • Always handle the flag with respect when raising or lowering, and avoid letting it touch the ground.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • The flag should be taken down during extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, storms, or strong winds to prevent damage.
    • In harsh weather, the flag should be stored safely in a dry, protected area until conditions improve.
    • If the flag is flown outdoors, ensure it is made from durable materials suitable for the local climate, especially for prolonged exposure to sun or rain.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The proper way to retire the flag is by burning it in a respectful ceremony or burying it in a dignified manner.
    • It is important to retire the flag with the respect it deserves, as it is a symbol of the nation’s heritage and pride.

By adhering to these care instructions, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and exceptional quality for years to come. Proper care not only preserves its condition but also reflects the pride and respect for the heritage it represents.
