For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Norway flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to wash the flag and help minimise fading. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to avoid any damage or snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Avoid using a tumble dryer as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry, and secure location to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Norway Flag:
    • Lay the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface with the cross design clearly visible.
    • Fold the flag lengthwise in thirds, aligning the edges so that the blue cross remains centred, and the white outline is even on both sides.
    • Bring the right edge of the flag over to meet the left edge, forming a long, narrow strip with the cross positioned in the centre.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise again, ensuring that the top and bottom edges align to create a more compact shape.
    • Begin folding the flag into a triangular shape from one end. Fold the bottom edge up and towards the top at an angle, creating a point.
    • Continue folding the flag in a triangular manner until it is folded into a compact triangle or square shape.
    • Ensure each fold is neat and aligned, with the flag’s design remaining visible on the outside of the final fold.
    • Store the folded flag in a protective case or safe location to keep it in good condition and ready for display.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached when flown to avoid unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Remove the flag during extreme weather conditions or overnight to maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, replace the flag or seek the help of a professional seamstress for repairs.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows significant signs of wear, consider investing in a new one to keep its appearance pristine for important events.

Flying the Norway Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Ensure the flagpole is in good condition and securely installed before raising the flag.
    • Header with Loops: Slide the reinforced loops over the pole and secure them with sister clips to keep the flag steady.
    • Vertical Sleeve: Slide the pole through the sleeve until it is fully extended, ensuring the flag is properly aligned and hangs evenly.
    • Gently pull the halyard to hoist the flag up the pole, making sure it rises smoothly and without obstruction.
    • Once the flag is fully raised, tie off the halyard to prevent it from moving in the wind and causing damage.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • The Norway flag should be flown showcasing the blue cross outlined in white.
    • Position the flag so that it is visible and not obscured by other objects or flags.
    • The flag should be flown in a way that it is not wrinkled or bunched up, ensuring it is presented crisply and respectfully.
    • Avoid allowing the flag to touch the ground or any objects that could damage or soil it.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the peak for a moment before lowering it to the halfway point on the flagpole.
    • Ensure the flag is lowered symmetrically and balanced on the pole to maintain a respectful appearance.
    • If flying multiple flags, the Norway flag should be placed in the centre or the highest position when flown alongside other flags at half-mast.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset as a sign of respect, ensuring it is only displayed during daylight hours unless illuminated at night.
    • When flying the flag at night, use proper lighting to illuminate the flag so it can be viewed clearly. The lighting should be placed so it shines directly on the flag without casting shadows.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag during adverse weather conditions such as strong winds, heavy rain, or snow, as these can damage the fabric.
    • If severe weather is forecasted, it is best to lower the flag to protect it from potential tearing or other damage.
    • For flags flown outdoors, choose durable and weather-resistant materials designed to withstand various weather elements.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When a flag becomes worn, frayed, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The flag can be ceremonially burned in a dignified manner or taken to a designated local facility for proper disposal.
    • It is recommended to follow local guidelines or traditions for the respectful retirement of a national flag, ensuring the act is done in a manner that honours the symbol it represents.

By following these care instructions, your flag will stay vibrant and in excellent condition for years to come. Caring for your flag is not just about preservation but also about honouring the pride and heritage it embodies.
