  • Star of the Southern Cross: Located within the Union Jack, symbolising Niue’s place in the Pacific region.

For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Niue flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to gently wash the flag and help maintain its vivid colours. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage or discolour the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle using cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent any snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat on a clean surface or hang it up to air dry. Avoid using a tumble dryer, as high heat may shrink or weaken the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Store the flag in a cool, dry place away from moisture to prevent mildew or damage.
  3. Folding the Niue Flag:
    • Lay the Flag Flat: Place the flag on a clean, smooth surface with the design facing up, ensuring there are no wrinkles or creases.
    • First Fold Lengthwise: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the long edges so the yellow field and Union Jack section are together, with the design side facing out.
    • Second Fold Lengthwise: Fold the flag in half lengthwise again to create a narrower strip, ensuring the edges are even and aligned.
    • Third Fold Widthwise: Fold the flag in half widthwise to form a compact rectangle, with the design side still facing outward.
    • Final Neat Folds: Fold the flag into thirds or quarters, depending on the storage size needed, ensuring all folds are smooth and even for a tidy finish.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from any sharp items or rough surfaces that could cause tears or snags.
    • Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is properly secured when flying, to prevent strain and potential damage.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during severe weather or overnight to protect it from harsh conditions.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider taking the flag to a professional for mending. This can help restore its integrity and prolong its use.
    • Replacement: When significant wear and tear occur, replacing the flag is recommended to ensure it always looks its best for special events.

Flying the Niue Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Header with Loops: If the flag features a header with loops, thread the halyard or rope through the reinforced loops and secure it tightly before raising. This ensures a firm attachment and helps the flag rise evenly.
    • Vertical Sleeve: For flags with a vertical sleeve, slide the pole through the sleeve, ensuring it is positioned correctly at the top of the flagpole.
    • Begin raising the flag briskly, ensuring it ascends smoothly and does not snag or catch on the pole.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • Ensure the flag is flown on a pole or mast that is tall and visible, allowing it to be seen clearly from all sides.
    • The Union Jack section should be positioned in the top left corner of the flag.
    • Position the flag in such a way that it is fully extended and not obstructed by surrounding elements, ensuring it flies with dignity and respect.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • Lower the flag to half-mast at the start of a period of mourning, ensuring it is flown halfway down the flagpole.
    • When raising the flag to half-mast, do so slowly and with reverence, and when lowering it, always return it to full mast before bringing it back down completely.
    • It is customary to fly the flag at half-mast on designated days of remembrance or during times of national mourning as prescribed by local regulations.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Raise the flag at sunrise to honour the day, and lower it at sunset to show respect at the end of the day.
    • If lighting is required for night-time display, ensure the flag is well-illuminated to remain visible and to avoid disrespect.
    • Avoid flying the flag in darkness unless it is properly lit, as flying it at night without appropriate lighting is considered disrespectful.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Only fly the flag in weather conditions where it can be safely displayed. Avoid flying the flag in severe or stormy weather that may cause damage or result in the flag becoming entangled.
    • If extreme weather conditions are forecasted, take the flag down to prevent tearing, fraying, or other damage.
    • Ensure that the flag is made from weather-resistant materials, such as high-quality knitted polyester, which withstands varying outdoor conditions while maintaining its appearance.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag is no longer in suitable condition for display, it should be retired respectfully.
    • To retire a worn or damaged flag, fold it carefully and dispose of it in a dignified manner. This can include burning it in a ceremonial way, ensuring that it is done with care and respect.
    • Contact a local flag association or organisation for guidance on proper retirement methods if needed.

By following these guidelines, your flag will maintain its bright colours and high quality for many years. Proper care is essential not just for preservation but as a mark of respect for the heritage it represents.
