Evanevans 100% Australian Made and owned

For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Nigeria flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent when washing the flag to help prevent fading. Avoid bleach or strong chemicals as they can damage the fabric and colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water and place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to reduce the risk of snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Do not tumble dry, as high heat may shrink or weaken the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Store the flag in a cool, dry place away from moisture to prevent damage.
  3. Folding the Nigeria Flag:
    • Begin by laying the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface with the green stripes at both sides, and the white stripe in the centre.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the top and bottom edge so that they meet at the centre, forming a long narrow strip.
    • Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, ensuring that the edges remain aligned.
    • Continue folding the flag into thirds, starting from one end.
    • Carefully press down to create a smooth and even fold, maintaining the flag’s shape and preventing creases or bulges.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly fastened when displayed to prevent excessive strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Remove the flag during harsh weather or overnight to help preserve its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small rips or fraying, take the flag to a professional seamstress for mending.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear and tear, consider replacing it to maintain its appearance during important events.

Flying the Nigeria Flag:

  • Raising the Flag
    • Begin by ensuring the flag is in good condition and free from any damage or fraying before raising it.
    • Header with Loops: Attach the loops to the flagpole using hooks or sister clips, making sure they are evenly spaced to allow the flag to hang freely.
    • Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve onto the flagpole, ensuring it fits snugly and moves smoothly when raised.
    • Raise the flag briskly and smoothly, ensuring it reaches the top of the pole without touching the ground. It should be hoisted with respect and care.
  • Displaying the Flag
    • The Nigeria flag should be flown with the green stripes at both sides, and the white stripe in the middle.
    • Ensure the flag is displayed in a way that allows it to fly freely without obstruction from nearby objects or structures.
    • If displaying multiple flags, the Nigeria flag should be flown at the same height and in a position of honour, either to the right or in the centre when flown with other flags.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast
    • The flag should be flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning or respect for significant events such as national tragedies or the death of prominent figures.
    • Raise the flag to the top of the pole first, then lower it to the halfway mark. When lowering the flag from half-mast, it should be raised back to the top before being taken down.
    • Ensure that the flag is securely fastened and remains visible and dignified during the period it is flown at half-mast.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, unless it is illuminated by a spotlight to ensure visibility at night.
    • If the flag is flown overnight, make sure it is well-lit and remains properly secured to avoid damage and to show respect.
    • If you are unable to raise or lower the flag at these times, ensure it is flown during daylight hours only.
  • Weather Conditions
    • The Nigeria flag should not be flown during severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms to prevent damage.
    • If inclement weather is forecasted, lower the flag to prevent wear and tear or potential tears caused by harsh elements.
    • If flying the flag in areas with unpredictable weather, consider using weather-resistant materials that can withstand the elements.
  • Retirement of the Flag
    • When the flag becomes worn out or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The proper way to retire the flag is by burning it in a dignified manner, ensuring it is done in a private or ceremonial setting. Alternatively, the flag can be taken to a local authority or community group that handles flag retirements.
    • Never dispose of a flag in a casual or disrespectful manner, such as through regular waste disposal, to honour its significance and meaning.

By following these guidelines, your flag will maintain its bright colours and durability for years. Proper care not only preserves the flag but also honours the heritage and pride it represents.
