For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the New Zealand flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, ensuring the colours stay vibrant. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals that can degrade the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging or damage.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Store in a cool, dry, and safe place to protect it from moisture or mildew.
  3. Folding the New Zealand Flag:
    • Lay Flat: Place the flag on a clean, flat surface, ensuring it is completely smoothed out with no creases or wrinkles.
    • Align Lengthwise: Fold the flag lengthwise, bringing the top edge down to meet the bottom edge, aligning the Union Jack and the red stars carefully.
    • Fold Lengthwise Again: Fold the flag lengthwise once more, ensuring the Union Jack is visible and properly aligned at the top corner.
    • Begin Triangular Folding: Starting from the hoist side (the side with the loops or sleeve), fold the corner diagonally upward to create a triangle.
    • Continue Triangular Folds: Keep folding the flag in triangular sections, moving toward the fly end (the opposite side). Ensure each fold is tight and neat to maintain the shape.
    • Tuck the Final Edge: Once you reach the end, tuck any remaining fabric securely into the folds to keep the flag compact and tidy.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp edges or rough surfaces to prevent tears or snags.
    • Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is securely attached when displayed to minimise stress on the material.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during severe weather conditions or overnight to prolong its lifespan.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or frays, have the flag professionally repaired to maintain its quality.
    • Replacement: Replace the flag when it shows significant wear to ensure it remains an elegant symbol for display.

Flying the New Zealand Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flag is clean and free from any damage.
    • Using the Header with Loops: Secure the loops of the header onto the halyard or rope, making sure they are evenly spaced and fastened tightly to avoid slipping.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag onto the flagpole through the vertical sleeve, ensuring the top edge is properly positioned.
    • Hoist the flag briskly to the top of the flagpole, allowing it to fly proudly and freely, without any obstruction.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • The New Zealand flag should be flown in a way that the Union Jack remains at the upper left corner when viewed from the front.
    • The flag should be displayed in a position of prominence, such as the highest point of the flagpole or in a location where it can be seen clearly from a distance.
    • When flown alongside other flags, the New Zealand flag should be at the same height and be given the same respect as other national or state flags.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • The flag should be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect during periods of national mourning or as directed by official announcements.
    • To lower the flag to half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole, then lower it to the halfway point.
    • When raising the flag back to full mast, do so briskly to symbolise a return to normality.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, showing respect for the national symbol.
    • If illuminated by external lights, the flag can remain flying throughout the night. However, ensure it is not flown at night if it is not adequately lit.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag in severe weather conditions, such as strong winds, heavy rain, or storms, as this can cause damage to the fabric.
    • Flags should be brought down during adverse weather to prevent fraying and wear and tear.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When a flag becomes worn or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired with dignity and respect.
    • The proper way to dispose of a damaged flag is to burn it in a respectful and solemn manner. Ensure the flag is entirely consumed in the fire, symbolising its proper and honourable retirement.
    • Alternatively, contact a local veterans’ group or organisation that handles flag retirement to ensure it is disposed of appropriately.

By adhering to these care tips, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and durability, serving as a lasting tribute to New Zealand’s pride and heritage.
