For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Nauru flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, avoiding bleach or harsh chemicals that may harm the fabric or colours.
    • Machine Wash: If using a washing machine, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snags.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can cause shrinkage or damage.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it in a cool, dry place to prevent mould or moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Nauru Flag:
    • Start by laying the flag flat on a clean, dry surface with the design facing upwards.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, ensuring the yellow stripe aligns perfectly and the star remains visible at the bottom left corner.
    • Fold it lengthwise again, keeping the edges straight and the yellow stripe centred prominently.
    • Begin folding from the side opposite the white star, creating small, even rectangles or accordion folds.
    • Continue folding until only a neat rectangle remains, with the star and yellow stripe clearly visible on top.
    • Smooth out any wrinkles to maintain a crisp, professional appearance.
    • Store the folded flag in a protective cover or a clean, dry space to prevent dust or moisture damage.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or abrasive surfaces that might cause tears or snags.
    • Secure Installation: Attach the flag securely to minimise stress on the material while it is displayed.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during severe weather or overnight to protect it from wear.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consult a professional seamstress for repairs.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant damage or wear, consider purchasing a new one to ensure it looks its best on special occasions.

Flying the Nauru Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Using the Header with Loops: Attach the reinforced loops at the top of the flag to the halyard or rope, using the sister clips for secure fastening. Ensure the flag is positioned correctly with the yellow stripe at the centre and the star at the bottom left.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring it fits snugly. Position the flag so the yellow stripe is at the centre and the star is in the bottom left corner.
    • Raise the flag briskly, without allowing it to touch the ground, and ensure it is fully extended at the top of the flagpole.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When flying the flag horizontally, ensure the yellow stripe is at the centre and the white star is positioned in the bottom left corner.
    • If the flag is displayed vertically, the same positioning applies, with the yellow stripe at the centre and the star on the top left.
    • Never allow the flag to touch the ground or any other surface as a sign of respect for the nation it represents.
    • Ensure the flag is displayed in an upright and undamaged state.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the Nauru Flag at half-mast, first raise the flag to the top of the pole, then lower it slowly to the half-way point.
    • The flag should be at half-mast in times of national mourning or during solemn occasions.
    • Always raise the flag to the full position again before lowering it at the end of the day or after the event.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • At sunrise, raise the flag to the top of the pole briskly and respectfully.
    • At sunset, lower the flag slowly and ceremoniously, ensuring it does not touch the ground.
    • It is customary to fold the flag after it has been lowered at sunset, ensuring it is handled with care.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • The flag should be taken down during extreme weather conditions such as strong winds, rain, or storms to prevent damage.
    • If the flag is flown outdoors, make sure to inspect it regularly for signs of wear or tear, especially after severe weather.
    • For windy or wet conditions, consider using weather-resistant flag materials or protective coverings when flying the flag.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Nauru Flag becomes worn, torn, or otherwise damaged beyond repair, it should be retired in a respectful manner.
    • The flag can be retired by burning it in a dignified and controlled ceremony, ensuring the flag is destroyed respectfully.
    • Alternatively, the flag can be sent to a local authority for proper disposal.

By following these guidelines, your Nauru Flag will maintain its vibrant appearance and remain in excellent condition for years. Proper care not only preserves its beauty but also honours the national pride and heritage it represents.
