For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Myanmar flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag and protect its colours. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach that may cause fading or damage.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry naturally. Refrain from tumble drying, as high heat can damage or shrink the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry, and safe place to prevent moisture damage or mildew.
  3. Folding the Myanmar Flag:
    • Begin by laying the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface with the front side facing up.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the top and bottom edges, so the two stripes are perfectly even.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise again, ensuring that the red stripe remains on top, with the green and yellow stripes folded beneath it.
    • Next, fold the flag in half widthwise, ensuring the edges meet neatly in the centre.
    • Continue folding the flag into smaller sections, each fold should be about 20-30cm, maintaining a compact, triangular shape as you go.
    • When you reach the end, tuck the flag neatly into its final folded form, ensuring no fabric is exposed and the flag is stored in a respectful and tidy manner.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp edges or abrasive surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely attached to its pole or mount to minimise stress on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during extreme weather or overnight to extend its lifespan.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, take the flag to a professional seamstress for repairs.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear, consider purchasing a new one to maintain its appearance and honour its symbolism.

Flying the Myanmar Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Using the Header with Loops: If the flag has a header with loops, attach the loops securely to the flagpole’s cleats or ropes.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: If the flag has a vertical sleeve, slide the sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring it fits snugly.
    • Always raise the Myanmar flag briskly and with respect, ensuring that it is fully unfurled before it reaches the top of the flagpole.
    • Ensure that the flag does not touch the ground as it is raised, as this is considered disrespectful.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displayed horizontally, the flag should be oriented with the star in the centre and yellow stripe in the top.
    • When flown with other flags, the Myanmar flag should be placed in the position of honour, typically the highest flag or at the observer’s far left when displayed on a wall or platform.
    • Ensure that the flag is securely attached to the flagpole or mount, so it flies freely without any obstruction.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • When flying the Myanmar flag at half-mast, raise it to the top of the pole first, then lower it to a position halfway down the flagpole.
    • The flag should remain in this position as a sign of mourning or respect.
    • When the occasion has passed, raise the flag back to full mast with the same care and dignity as when it was first raised.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Raise the flag at sunrise with respect, ensuring it is fully hoisted by the time the sun is visible.
    • At sunset, the flag should be lowered with care before the last rays of sunlight disappear, taking care to fold it properly once it is down.
    • Always ensure the flag is fully raised at the beginning of the day and lowered by the end of the day, in line with standard flag etiquette.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • While the Myanmar flag is durable, it should not be flown during extreme weather conditions such as heavy storms, high winds, or torrential rain, as these can damage the fabric.
    • If adverse weather is expected, take the flag down and store it safely to preserve its quality.
    • The flag should only be flown during clear, calm weather conditions to ensure it maintains its vibrant appearance.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Myanmar flag is no longer fit to fly due to wear or damage, it should be retired respectfully.
    • A retired flag should never be discarded in the trash; instead, it should be carefully folded and, if possible, burned in a dignified ceremony.
    • Alternatively, the flag can be handed over to a local authority, such as a government office, for proper retirement and disposal.

By following these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and pristine condition for years. Caring for your flag is a way to show respect and pride in Myanmar’s rich heritage.
