For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Mozambique flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always wash the flag using a mild detergent to preserve the colours and minimise fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. To prevent snags, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Do not tumble dry, as the heat may shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Make sure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place to avoid moisture damage and preserve its condition.
  3. Folding the Mozambique Flag:
    • Begin by laying the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface, ensuring there are no wrinkles or creases.
    • Fold the flag lengthwise in half from the hoist side (the side with the loops or sleeve) towards the fly side, ensuring the two sides align neatly.
    • Fold it again lengthwise, bringing the left side over to the right, so the flag is now quartered, with the design facing inward.
    • Starting from the hoist end, fold the flag into a triangular shape by folding one corner over, then continue folding in a triangle pattern until the flag is compact and forms a small, neat triangle or rectangle.
    • Ensure the last fold securely holds the flag in place, keeping the design inside and the flag neatly folded for storage.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces to prevent snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly fastened when displayed to avoid unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Remove the flag during extreme weather or overnight to preserve its longevity.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, it’s best to repair or replace the flag and consult a professional seamstress for detailed repairs.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows signs of significant wear, consider replacing it to maintain its appearance during key occasions.

Flying the Mozambique Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flag is clean and free from any damage before raising it.
    • Attach the flag securely to the flagpole using the appropriate method (loops or sleeve, depending on the finish).
    • Hoist the flag briskly, ensuring it is fully raised and flying at the top of the flagpole, with the star and symbols facing the correct direction.
    • Never allow the flag to touch the ground during raising or lowering to maintain respect for the symbol it represents.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displayed on a flagpole, the Mozambique flag should be flown with the red triangle at the hoist side, the green stripe at the top, and the star, book, hoe, and AK-47 clearly visible.
    • If displaying the flag indoors or on a wall, ensure the star is at the hoist side and the flag is hung with respect to the symbol and design.
    • Always display the flag with its full dimensions visible and ensure it remains taut to avoid wrinkles or folds.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise the flag to the top of the pole briefly and then lower it to the halfway point.
    • The flag should remain at half-mast to honour national days of mourning or the passing of significant figures.
    • Once the flag is to be raised back to full height, it should first be hoisted to the top before lowering to full-mast.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset unless otherwise specified for a special occasion.
    • If the flag is to be flown at night, it should be well-lit to ensure visibility and respect for the national symbol.
    • During daylight hours, always ensure the flag is raised to full height by 8 am and lowered by sunset in accordance with standard flag etiquette.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag in harsh weather conditions, such as high winds or heavy rain, as these may damage the fabric.
    • If inclement weather is expected, lower the flag to prevent wear or potential tearing.
    • Ensure the flag is securely fastened during gusty winds to prevent it from becoming damaged or torn.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Mozambique flag is no longer in a condition to be flown, it should be respectfully retired by folding it and disposing of it properly.
    • The retired flag should be burned or buried in a dignified manner, ensuring that it is done so in a respectful and ceremonial way to honour the flag’s significance.
    • It is important to never discard the flag in a disrespectful manner, such as in trash or on the ground.

By following these guidelines, your flag will retain its vibrant colours and remain in top condition for many years. Caring for your flag is a way of honouring the pride and heritage it represents.
