For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Mali flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, as this helps maintain the brightness of its colours. Avoid bleach or any harsh chemicals that may damage the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. To prevent snagging, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to dry naturally. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can cause shrinkage or damage the material.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place to avoid any moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Mali Flag:
    • Lay the Flag Flat: Begin by spreading the flag out on a clean, flat surface to ensure the fabric is wrinkle-free and the design is visible.
    • Fold the Flag Lengthwise: Gently fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the top and bottom edges. Smooth out any creases as you go.
    • Fold Again Lengthwise: Take the folded edge and fold it over again, creating a narrower rectangle. Ensure the edges remain straight and neat.
    • Fold into a Triangle (Optional): If preferred, you can then fold the flag into a triangle by bringing the bottom corner up to meet the top edge, then continue folding the triangle down, layer by layer, until the flag is in a compact triangular shape.
    • Ensure Clean Edges: As you fold, ensure that all edges are neatly aligned and secure to maintain the flag’s integrity when stored.
    • Final Fold: Finish by folding the flag into a manageable size for storage or display, ensuring the design stays visible for easy identification.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Protect the flag from sharp items or rough surfaces that could cause tears or snags.
    • Secure Installation: When hanging or attaching the flag, ensure it is firmly secured to prevent any strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: To preserve the fabric and colours, bring the flag down during extreme weather or overnight.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, it is best to replace the flag and consult a professional seamstress for any necessary repairs.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant signs of wear, consider purchasing a new one to maintain its visual appeal, especially for important events.

Flying the Mali Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Using the Header with Loops: Attach the reinforced loops at the top of the flag to the halyard or rope. Use the sister clips to secure the flag, ensuring a tight and secure attachment to the pole.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring the sleeve is aligned correctly. If necessary, secure the flag with clips or ties along the flagpole to prevent shifting.
    • Raise the Mali flag briskly and ensure it is unfurled completely without any tangles or creases.
    • Never allow the flag to touch the ground during the raising process.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • The Mali flag should be flown on a vertical flagpole, ensuring the flag is clearly visible to all.
    • The flag should always be displayed with the green stripe at the left, followed by the yellow stripe in the middle, and the red stripe at the right. This ensures the flag is correctly oriented to represent Mali’s national colours and their symbolic meaning.
    • When displayed with other flags, ensure that the Mali flag is at the same height or positioned higher to show respect. If flying multiple flags on the same pole, the Mali flag should be positioned at the top or centre of the arrangement.
    • Ensure the flag is visible from all directions without obstructions to display the national pride of Mali effectively.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • The Mali flag should be flown at half-mast to mark periods of national mourning or to commemorate significant events or figures.
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, raise the flag to the top of the pole first, then lower it to about halfway down.
    • When the flag is at half-mast, always raise it to the top again before lowering it for the day. This practice ensures the flag is never left at half-mast overnight.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Mali flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, in accordance with proper flag etiquette.
    • Ensure the flag is fully raised by sunrise and lowered at sunset, allowing for no part of the flag to remain in the dark.
    • If the flag is illuminated at night, it can remain raised, but it should be properly lit to maintain its dignity.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • While the Mali flag is designed to withstand various weather conditions, extreme weather such as heavy storms, high winds, or excessive rain should be avoided to prevent damage.
    • If adverse weather conditions are expected, it is best to lower the flag to protect its integrity.
    • In harsh climates, consider using a more durable material or retracting the flag during severe weather to ensure its longevity.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Mali flag becomes tattered, faded, or otherwise unfit for display, it should be respectfully retired.
    • To retire the flag, it should be burned or otherwise disposed of in a dignified manner. This is often done in a ceremony that honours the country’s flag and the values it represents.
    • Before disposal, ensure that the flag is clean and free of any harmful materials, as burning or disposing of the flag should be done with respect and care for safety and tradition.

By following these care instructions, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for many years. Proper care ensures that the flag continues to represent Mali’s pride and heritage with the respect it deserves.
