  • 14-Point Star: The star, with its 14 points, represents the unity of the 13 states and the federal government.
  • Blue Canton: The blue canton in the top-left corner signifies the unity of the Malaysian people, while also symbolising the harmony of the various ethnic groups.
  • Red stripes: The red stripes represent bravery.
  • White stripes: The white stripes represent purity.

For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Malaysia flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always use a mild detergent when washing the flag to help preserve its vibrant colours. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging or damage.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to dry naturally. Avoid tumble drying as the high heat can cause the fabric to shrink or deteriorate.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to avoid discolouration and moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Malaysia Flag:
    • Start with a flat surface: Lay the Malaysia flag out on a clean, flat surface with the front (design) side facing up.
    • Fold lengthwise: Bring the bottom edge of the flag up to meet the top edge, aligning the edges precisely. The crescent and star should be facing outward.
    • Align the hoist side: Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, ensuring the hoist side (the side with the flagpole attachment) is on the outside, keeping the design visible.
    • Create a narrow fold: Fold the flag lengthwise one more time to create a smaller, more manageable strip, maintaining the neat alignment of the colours and design.
    • Start folding diagonally: Begin folding the flag from the bottom right corner, folding it diagonally in a triangular shape toward the top of the flag.
    • Continue folding: Continue folding in triangles until the flag is completely folded into a compact triangle or rectangle. Be mindful to fold neatly to avoid creases or damage to the flag’s fabric.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp edges or rough surfaces that could cause snags, tears, or fraying.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely fastened to avoid undue stress on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: During extreme weather or overnight, bring the flag indoors to protect its condition and prevent unnecessary wear.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small rips or fraying, it’s best to replace the flag. You can also take the damaged flag to a professional seamstress for repairs.
    • Replacement: When the flag starts to show significant wear, replacing it ensures it continues to fly proudly during important events.

Flying the Malaysia Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Ensure the flag is clean and in good condition before raising it.
    • Using Header with Loops: If your flag has a header with loops, ensure the loops are properly placed over the flagpole, securing it with the included clips or fasteners for a firm and smooth display.
    • Using Vertical Sleeve: For flags with a vertical sleeve, simply slide the sleeve onto the flagpole, ensuring it fits snugly for a clean, streamlined look.
    • When raising the flag, do so briskly and smoothly, ensuring it does not touch the ground.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • The Malaysia flag should be displayed prominently in a vertical or horizontal position, with the crescent and star positioned to the left or top when facing the flag.
    • If flying multiple flags, ensure the Malaysia flag is at the highest position or on the right (when displayed horizontally).
    • It should not be flown upside down or in a way that it touches the ground, other objects, or the floor.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • The Malaysia flag is flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning or respect for a significant event, such as a national tragedy or the death of a prominent leader.
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole, then lower it to the half-way point.
    • Ensure the flag is returned to full mast after the designated mourning period has ended.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Malaysia flag should be raised at sunrise and taken down at sunset, ensuring it is flown in daylight hours.
    • If the flag is displayed overnight, it must be properly illuminated, especially if flown outside of business hours.
    • Always raise the flag with care and take it down before nightfall unless it’s illuminated in accordance with proper guidelines.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • It’s best to fly the Malaysia flag during calm weather conditions to avoid damage from strong winds or storms.
    • If there are high winds, remove the flag to prevent tearing or fraying.
    • In wet or rainy conditions, it is recommended to take the flag down and protect it from exposure to the elements.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Malaysia flag becomes worn, torn, or faded beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The flag should be burned or buried in a dignified manner, ensuring it is done in a way that respects the significance of the national symbol.
    • Do not dispose of the flag in regular waste; contact a local authority or organisation for proper retirement procedures.

By following these care guidelines, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and stay in excellent condition for years to come. Taking proper care of your flag is a way to honour the pride and heritage it represents.
