For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Madagascar flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always wash the flag with a mild detergent to protect the colours. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that can damage the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, use a gentle cycle with cold water. To prevent snagging, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep the flag in a cool, dry place, away from moisture to prevent any damage.
  3. Folding the Madagascar Flag:
    • Start with a flat surface: Lay the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface, ensuring it is free from dirt or debris.
    • Fold lengthwise: Begin by folding the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the left edge over to align with the right edge. Make sure the flag’s design is facing outward.
    • Fold in half again: Fold the flag in half lengthwise once more, this time aligning the edges neatly, so that it is now one-quarter of its original width.
    • Fold from bottom to top: Starting from the bottom, fold the flag upwards in even sections. Aim for three to four folds, making each fold neat and even to ensure a compact shape.
    • Align the final edges: Ensure the flag’s edges align properly and the folds are uniform for a clean, crisp finish.
    • Store properly: Once folded, store the flag in a cool, dry place to maintain its shape and prevent unnecessary creasing or damage.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp edges or rough surfaces to prevent snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely fastened to prevent strain on the fabric when displayed.
    • Minimise Exposure: In severe weather conditions or overnight, take the flag down to preserve its integrity.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider professional repair services to restore the flag’s appearance.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant signs of wear, it may be time to replace it to maintain its visual impact during important events.

Flying the Madagascar Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Header with Loops: If your flag has a header with loops, thread the loops onto the flagpole and secure them with clips or ropes. Ensure that the flag is evenly spaced on the pole.
    • Vertical Sleeve: If your flag has a vertical sleeve, simply slide the sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring it fits snugly.
    • Always raise the flag briskly, ensuring that it is hoisted to the top of the flagpole.
    • Ensure the flag is secure and not tangled, allowing it to fly freely without obstruction.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When flying the Madagascar flag, ensure it is displayed with dignity, ensuring that it does not touch the ground or any other surface.
    • The flag should be positioned with the red stripe at the top when displayed vertically, or with the flag’s design displayed upright when flying horizontally.
    • If displayed alongside other flags, Madagascar’s flag should be flown at the same height and in a position of prominence.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • The flag should be flown at half-mast to mark periods of mourning or to honour those who have passed away.
    • To lower the flag to half-mast, raise it to the top first, then lower it to the halfway point.
    • When raising the flag back to full height, always raise it briskly first before bringing it back to the top of the pole.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The flag should be raised at sunrise, at the start of the day, and taken down at sunset, when the day officially ends.
    • If you are unable to take the flag down at sunset, ensure it is illuminated at night if left flying.
    • Ensure the flag is taken down in the evening with care, avoiding contact with the ground to preserve its integrity.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • The Madagascar flag should be flown in suitable weather conditions. During strong winds, heavy rain, or storms, it is advisable to bring the flag down to prevent damage.
    • Flags should not be flown in conditions that may cause excessive wear or tearing, including extreme temperatures or prolonged exposure to harsh elements.
    • When the weather conditions improve, the flag can be raised again to resume flying.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag becomes worn or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired with dignity.
    • The flag should not be disposed of in a casual manner; instead, it should be respectfully burned or buried, ensuring that it is destroyed in a way that reflects the honour due to the national symbol.
    • Contact a local organisation or authority if you are unsure of the most appropriate way to retire the flag, ensuring that it is treated with the respect it deserves.

By following these care instructions, your flag will maintain its vivid colours and remain in excellent condition for many years. Taking proper care of your flag ensures that it continues to represent your pride and heritage with distinction.
