For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Luxembourg flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent when washing the flag to prevent fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that can damage the colours and fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. To protect the flag, place it in a mesh laundry bag to prevent any snags.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as the heat can cause shrinkage or fabric damage.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Store it in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, to avoid mildew or fabric degradation.
  3. Folding the Luxembourg Flag:
    • Lay the flag flat with the front (the side that will be displayed) facing downwards.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the red stripe with the blue stripe, ensuring both are facing outward.
    • Fold the flag lengthwise again, this time bringing the red and white stripes together, ensuring the white stripe is inside.
    • Starting from the fly end (the end opposite the flagpole), begin folding the flag into a triangle. Fold one corner over the flag, making a triangular shape, and continue folding along the length of the flag.
    • As you fold, maintain even, sharp edges to ensure a neat, compact shape.
    • Once you reach the end of the flag, tuck the remaining fabric inside the final fold to secure it in place.
    • Store the folded flag in a safe, dry location to preserve its condition.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag clear of sharp objects or rough surfaces that could tear or snag the fabric.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly fastened to avoid unnecessary strain or damage to the fabric while flying.
    • Minimise Exposure: In extreme weather conditions or overnight, bring the flag down to protect it from potential damage.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, replace the flag or seek professional repair services from a seamstress to restore its condition.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows signs of significant wear or damage, consider purchasing a new one to maintain its visual impact during key events.

Flying the Luxembourg Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flag is securely attached to the flagpole, with the red stripe positioned at the top.
    • Using the Header with Loops: If your flag has a header with loops, simply attach the loops to the flagpole using the sister clips, ensuring a secure fit.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: For flags with a vertical sleeve, slide the sleeve over the flagpole. Ensure the flag is aligned properly, with the red stripe at the top.
    • Raise the flag briskly to the top of the pole, allowing it to fly freely and without obstruction. The flag should not touch the ground at any point.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When flying the Luxembourg flag, ensure it is displayed in its correct orientation, with the red stripe at the top, followed by the white and blue stripes in that order.
    • The flag should be hung vertically or horizontally, with no creases or wrinkles, to allow it to flow smoothly in the wind.
    • When flown with other flags, the Luxembourg flag should be given equal prominence and should be flown at the same height or slightly above other flags.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • When flying the Luxembourg flag at half-mast, raise the flag to the top of the pole first, then lower it to the halfway point.
    • The flag should be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect for national mourning or remembrance.
    • At the end of the day or after the memorial period, raise the flag back to the top of the pole before lowering it for the night.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Luxembourg flag should be raised at sunrise and taken down at sunset. Ensure the flag is raised briskly and taken down with care.
    • If the flag is flown overnight, it should be illuminated to prevent it from becoming weathered or damaged in the dark.
    • During the evening, ensure the flag is securely stored if not intended for overnight display.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the Luxembourg flag during severe weather conditions such as strong winds, heavy rain, or storms, as these can cause damage to the fabric.
    • During mild weather, the flag should be flown freely in the wind to showcase its colours, but ensure it is brought down during extreme weather to preserve its longevity.
    • Always check the flag’s condition before displaying it again after adverse weather.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Luxembourg flag becomes worn, torn, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The flag can be folded neatly and ceremoniously before being burned or properly disposed of, ensuring it is treated with dignity.
    • If the flag is still in good condition but no longer required, consider donating it to a local museum, historical society, or national institution.

By following these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for many years. Caring for your flag is a way to honour the pride and heritage it represents.
