  • Yellow Frigatebird: The yellow frigatebird signifies freedom and the country’s connection to nature.

For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Kiribati flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always clean the flag using a mild detergent to minimise fading. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals that could harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Refrain from tumble drying, as high temperatures may shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry, and secure location to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Kiribati Flag:
    • Lay Flat: Begin by placing the Kiribati flag on a clean, flat surface, ensuring it is completely unfolded and smooth to avoid creases.
    • Fold in Half Lengthwise: Take the right edge of the flag and fold it over to meet the left edge. Ensure the colours are on the outside and align the edges neatly.
    • Fold in Half Again: Fold the flag in half once more, bringing the new right edge over to meet the left edge again. This reduces the size and creates a more compact form.
    • Create Triangular Folds: Starting at the hoist (the side with the flagpole), take the bottom corner of the flag and fold it diagonally upwards towards the top edge, forming a triangle.
    • Continue Triangular Folds: Keep folding the flag in triangles by taking the remaining fabric and folding it upwards diagonally, making sure each fold is tight and aligned. Repeat this step until the entire length of the flag is folded into a triangular shape.
    • Tidy the Final Fold: Once you reach the end of the flag, tuck any excess fabric into the last triangle to keep the fold neat and secure.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that could lead to snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly fastened during display to avoid unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during severe weather or overnight to maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and taking the damaged one to a professional seamstress for mending.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear, think about purchasing a new one to uphold its appearance during important occasions.

Flying the Kiribati Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flag is free of any creases or folds to maintain its appearance.
    • Attach the flag securely to the flagpole using the appropriate finish (loops or sleeve) for a firm grip.
    • Stand facing the flagpole and pull the flag up smoothly, ensuring it rises evenly without tangling. Raise it briskly to the top of the pole, but avoid jerking the flag, which can cause damage.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • Position the Kiribati flag in a location that is clearly visible and unobstructed by trees, buildings, or other objects.
    • When displaying the flag alongside others, ensure that it occupies a position of honour, ideally to the right of other flags or at the centre if displayed with multiple flags.
    • Ensure the flag is displayed at an appropriate height, allowing it to flow freely in the wind for maximum visibility.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole and then lower it to the half-mast position, which is typically at a point equal to two-thirds of the flagpole’s height.
    • Ensure the flag remains securely attached and does not touch the ground during this process.
    • This is done to commemorate individuals or significant events, and the flag should be returned to full mast after the appropriate period.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Always raise the flag at sunrise and lower it at sunset, unless it is illuminated by a light source.
    • If you are displaying the flag overnight, ensure that it is adequately lit to honour its significance, reflecting respect for the symbol it represents.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid displaying the flag during severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, storms, or strong winds, as these can damage the fabric.
    • In cases of inclement weather, bring the flag down to protect it and ensure it maintains its vibrant colours and integrity.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Kiribati flag becomes worn or damaged beyond repair, it is important to retire it with dignity.
    • A respectful retirement involves folding the flag properly and then burning it in a private ceremony, ensuring that it is treated with the respect befitting its status as a national symbol.
    • Alternatively, consider donating the flag to a local community group that may conduct a retirement ceremony in honour of the flag’s service.

By following these guidelines, your flag will retain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for many years. Caring for your flag is not only about preservation but also about honouring the pride and heritage it represents.
