To maintain the quality and vivid colours of your Japan flag, please follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent when washing the flag to preserve its colours. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals, as they may damage the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can cause shrinkage or fabric damage.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is thoroughly dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Japan Flag:
    • Lay Flat: Start by placing the flag on a clean, flat surface with the red circle facing up.
    • First Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the edges carefully to ensure a smooth crease.
    • Second Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise again, making sure the edges are lined up perfectly. This will create a long, narrow rectangle.
    • Triangular Folds: Begin at one end and fold the flag into a triangle by taking the bottom corner and folding it up towards the top edge. Make sure the edge aligns with the side of the flag.
    • Repeat Triangles: Continue folding the flag in a triangular pattern, bringing the top triangle down over the previous fold until you reach the end of the flag.
    • Final Tuck: Once you reach the end, tuck any loose fabric into the folds to keep everything neat and secure.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that may cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached when displayed to minimise stress on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take down the flag during extreme weather or overnight to extend its lifespan.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or signs of fraying, remove the flag and consider having it professionally repaired by a seamstress.
    • Replacement: If the flag becomes significantly worn, consider a replacement to ensure it remains presentable for important occasions.

Flying the Japan Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flagpole is clean and free from any obstructions.
    • Header with Loops: If your flag has a header with loops, slide the loops over the flagpole and secure them using the halyard. Make sure the loops are evenly spaced for balanced support.
    • Vertical Sleeve: For flags with a vertical sleeve, simply slide the sleeve down over the top of the flagpole until it sits snugly against the pole, ensuring it is positioned correctly before raising it.
    • Raise the flag briskly and smoothly. Take care not to let the flag touch the ground during this process.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displayed alone, the Japan flag should be positioned at the highest point of the flagpole to signify its importance.
    • If flown with other flags, ensure the Japan flag is at the same height or higher than any other flags present.
    • Maintain a respectful distance from other flags and ensure the Japan flag is displayed to the left when viewed from the front, as per customary practices.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole before lowering it down to the half-mast position.
    • Ensure the flag remains horizontal and does not touch the ground.
    • The duration for half-mast is typically dictated by custom or government protocol; follow local guidelines for appropriate timings.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Japan flag should be raised at sunrise and taken down at sunset to show respect.
    • If the flag is illuminated at night, it may be flown continuously, but proper lighting should be maintained.
    • Always ensure the flag is raised and lowered ceremoniously, reflecting its national significance.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid displaying the flag in severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, or snow to prevent damage to the fabric.
    • If adverse weather is forecasted, consider taking the flag down to preserve its condition.
    • In windy areas, use flag material that is weather-resistant and suitable for outdoor display.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The retirement process typically involves burning the flag in a dignified manner, ensuring it is done safely and privately.
    • Consider consulting local authorities or veteran organisations for proper retirement ceremonies and guidelines to honour the flag’s significance.

By adhering to these care instructions, your flag will stay vibrant and in excellent condition for years. Caring for your flag not only preserves its quality but also shows respect for the pride and tradition it represents.
