To ensure the lasting quality and vibrant colours of your Ireland flag, please adhere to the following care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always clean the flag with a mild detergent to prevent fading. Avoid using bleach or any harsh chemicals that could harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to avoid snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Refrain from tumble drying, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry, and secure location to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Ireland Flag:
    • Preparation: Start by laying the flag on a flat, clean surface, ensuring it is free from any dirt or debris.
    • Align the Colours: Orient the flag so that the green, white, and orange sections are in the correct order (green on the hoist side).
    • First Fold: Fold the flag lengthwise, bringing the green side over to meet the orange side, ensuring the edges are aligned evenly.
    • Second Fold: Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, this time enclosing the white section between the green and orange, creating a long, narrow rectangle.
    • Final Fold: Starting from one end of the narrow rectangle, roll the flag tightly toward the opposite end, ensuring that the colours remain aligned and the fabric is smooth to prevent creases.
    • Secure the Roll: Once fully rolled, gently tuck the ends under to keep the flag compact and neat, making it easy to store or display.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Items: Avoid contact between the flag and any sharp tools or abrasive surfaces that could lead to snags or damage.
    • Secure Installation: Make certain the flag is firmly secured when in display to avoid undue stress on the fabric.
    • Flag Exposure: Take down the flag during severe weather conditions or at night to maintain its integrity and appearance.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and bringing the damaged one to a professional seamstress for mending.
    • Replacement: If the flag exhibits significant wear, it’s advisable to purchase a new one to maintain its appearance during important occasions.

Flying the Ireland Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Hold the flag at its base and ensure it is not twisted or tangled.
    • Using the Header with Loops: If your flag features a header with loops, thread the halyard through the reinforced loops at the top of the flag. This ensures a secure fit and allows for smooth raising and lowering.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: For flags with a vertical sleeve, simply slide the flag onto the flagpole until it reaches the top. Ensure the sleeve is aligned correctly for proper display before securing the flagpole in place.
    • Raise the flag briskly, allowing it to unfurl completely. Avoid letting it touch the ground during the process, as this is considered disrespectful.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displaying the Ireland flag, ensure that it is hoisted with the green stripe on the left when facing the flag.
    • If the flag is flown alongside others, make sure the Ireland flag is at the same height or higher than the others to honour its significance.
    • Maintain a clean and unobstructed area around the flag to ensure it can be seen and appreciated by all.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole before lowering it to the halfway point.
    • This is done to honour those who have passed away or during times of national mourning.
    • Ensure the flag is in the correct position and remains visible, as it represents respect and remembrance.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • It is customary to raise the flag at sunrise and lower it at sunset.
    • If illuminated at night, the flag can remain up; otherwise, it should not be displayed in darkness unless properly lit.
    • Always handle the flag with care during these times, ensuring it is raised and lowered smoothly.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag in severe weather conditions, such as heavy rain, storms, or high winds, to prevent damage.
    • If adverse weather is forecasted, take the flag down promptly to protect its fabric and colour integrity.
    • Ensure the flagpole is stable and secure, as a weak pole can lead to the flag being damaged or destroyed.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag becomes tattered, faded, or no longer suitable for display, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The appropriate method of retirement is to burn the flag in a dignified ceremony, ensuring that it is done in a safe environment.
    • Consider contacting local organisations or veterans’ groups for guidance on proper flag retirement practices to honour its significance appropriately.

By following these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and stay in excellent condition for years to come. Caring for your flag is not just about preservation; it’s also about honouring the pride and heritage it represents.
