For lasting quality and vibrant colours of your Guinea-Bissau flag, follow these care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent when washing the flag to minimise colour fading. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals that may cause damage.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry naturally. Do not tumble dry, as high heat can shrink or harm the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry location to prevent moisture-related damage.
  3. Folding the Guinea-Bissau Flag:
    • Lay the Flag Flat: Begin by laying the flag on a clean, flat surface with the green stripe closest to you and the black star in the left corner. Ensure there are no wrinkles to make folding easier.
    • Fold Lengthwise: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the top edge down to meet the bottom edge. Smooth out any creases to keep the fold neat.
    • Second Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise again.
    • Horizontal Fold: Fold the flag horizontally by bringing the short edge to meet the opposite short edge. The folded flag should now be a quarter of its original size, with the star still clearly visible.
    • Final Fold: Fold the flag once more horizontally, creating a compact rectangle. Make sure the black star is prominently displayed on top of the folded flag, signifying Guinea-Bissau’s national unity and pride.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is securely attached when displayed to avoid unnecessary tension or strain on the material.
    • Minimise Exposure: To extend the flag’s lifespan, take it down during severe weather or overnight to protect it from wear and tear.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or frays, remove the flag and consult a professional seamstress for repairs.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant signs of wear, it’s recommended to replace it, especially for important events or displays.

Flying the Guinea-Bissau Flag:

  • Raising the Flag
    • Header with Loops: For flags with a header and loops, attach the reinforced loops to the flagpole’s hooks or halyard clips. Ensure the sister clips are tightly fastened to prevent the flag from slipping, and then pull the halyard to raise the flag.
    • Vertical Sleeve: For flags with a vertical sleeve, slide the flag over the pole smoothly, ensuring the sleeve fits securely around the pole. Once it’s fully raised, secure the flag at the base with a flag holster or clip to keep it in place.
    • The Guinea-Bissau flag should always be raised briskly and respectfully, with two individuals, if possible, to ensure it doesn’t touch the ground.
  • Displaying the Flag
    • When displayed with other flags, the Guinea-Bissau flag should be on equal height and prominence to demonstrate respect for national symbols.
    • The black star, representing the unity of the African people, should face outward and be fully visible.
    • It must always be positioned to the left (from the observer’s perspective) when displayed next to another flag.
    • The flag should not be draped over vehicles or used as a covering for furniture, ensuring it is always treated with dignity.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast
    • During periods of mourning, the flag should be raised to the top of the flagpole briskly and then lowered to half-mast slowly.
    • Half-mast positioning means the flag should be roughly halfway down the flagpole, with the black star still clearly visible.
    • When lowering the flag from half-mast, raise it briefly to the top of the pole before lowering it completely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset
    • The Guinea-Bissau flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset to honour the nation respectfully.
    • If flown at night, the flag must be properly illuminated with a light source, ensuring that it remains visible and dignified.
    • It is customary to lower the flag slowly and with great care at sunset, avoiding any contact with the ground.
  • Weather Conditions
    • In adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, the flag should be taken down to prevent damage.
    • The fabric may fray or fade if exposed to extreme weather for prolonged periods, so ensure that the flag is flown only in suitable conditions to maintain its quality.
    • Ensure the flag is dry before raising it again after poor weather to avoid potential damage to the fabric.
  • Retirement of the Flag
    • When the Guinea-Bissau flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired in a dignified manner.
    • Flags should never be thrown away casually; instead, they should be respectfully folded and disposed of by burning or another appropriate method that honours its significance.
    • Consider replacing old flags with new ones to continue displaying your national pride in a respectful manner.

By adhering to these care instructions, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and pristine condition for years to come. Caring for your flag ensures you respect the heritage and pride it symbolises.
