Bring Guam’s Island Beauty to Life with Our Knitted Polyester Guam Flag

Guam, a beautiful Pacific island known for its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and vibrant Chamorro culture, stands as a unique symbol of Pacific resilience and identity. Whether the pristine beaches, historical significance, or its strong connection to the US, Guam holds a special place in its people’s hearts. Our Knitted Polyester Guam Flag embodies this spirit, providing an ideal way to proudly display your connection to the island.

The Guam Flag:

The Guam flag is a powerful representation of the island’s heritage and identity. Its design is deeply symbolic, reflecting the natural beauty and cultural significance of the island. Here’s what the elements of the Guam flag represent:
  • The Red Border: Symbolises the strength and resilience of the people of Guam, as well as the bloodshed during the island’s history, particularly during World War II.
  • The Blue Background: Represents the vast Pacific Ocean that surrounds Guam, symbolising the island’s connection to nature and its maritime culture.
  • The Seal: Depicts a coconut tree and a river mouth, signifying life, prosperity, and the importance of agriculture to the Chamorro people. The iconic shape of the seal resembles the Chamorro sling stone, a traditional tool used by the island’s indigenous people.

For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Guam flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent when washing the flag to help preserve its vibrant colours. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals that could cause fading or damage.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, use a gentle cycle with cold water. Placing the flag in a mesh laundry bag will help protect it from snagging.
    • Air Drying: Always air dry the flag by laying it flat or hanging it up. Avoid tumble drying, as the heat could shrink or harm the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Store it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture-related damage.
  3. Folding the Guam Flag:
    • Lay Flat: Start by laying the flag flat on a clean, dry surface with the emblem side facing up. Ensure the flag is smooth, free of wrinkles or creases.
    • Fold in Half Lengthwise: Carefully fold the flag lengthwise, bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge. Ensure the emblem remains visible and that the edges align evenly.
    • Fold Lengthwise Again: Fold the flag in half lengthwise a second time. This will make the flag narrower, and the emblem should still be visible, centred on the fold.
    • Create a Rectangular Fold: Begin folding the flag into a compact rectangular shape by making horizontal folds from the fly end (the edge furthest from the pole) towards the hoist end (the edge near the pole), keeping the folds neat and aligned.
    • Align and Tuck: Once fully folded, ensure that the flag forms a tidy rectangle with straight edges. If necessary, adjust any uneven folds to maintain a clean, professional appearance.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp or rough surfaces to prevent tears or snags.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly secured when displayed to avoid strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: To maintain its condition, take down the flag during harsh weather or overnight when not in use.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, remove the flag and consult a professional seamstress to repair the damage.
    • Replacement: When significant wear appears, consider replacing the flag to maintain its fresh appearance for special events.

Flying the Guam Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flagpole is clean and free from any obstructions.
    • Header with Loops: If using the header with loops, thread the halyard through the reinforced loops at the top of the flag, securing it in place with sister clips to ensure a stable lift.
    • Vertical Sleeve: For the vertical sleeve option, simply slide the flag down over the pole until it rests comfortably at the desired height, ensuring the emblem is positioned correctly for display.
    • As the flag is raised, salute it if appropriate, demonstrating respect and honour for the symbol it represents.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displaying the Guam flag alone, it should be positioned at the highest point or centre stage among other flags.
    • If flying multiple flags, ensure that the Guam flag is at the same height as the others and to its right (the observer’s left).
    • The flag should always be flown with the emblem facing outwards, whether on a vertical or horizontal display, to ensure it is viewed correctly.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole briefly before lowering it to the halfway point.
    • Ensure that the flag remains securely fastened at the half-mast position to avoid it getting tangled or blowing in the wind.
    • Half-mast displays are typically reserved for mourning or commemorative events, reflecting respect for those who have passed.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Guam flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset.
    • If illuminated, the flag can be flown overnight; otherwise, it should be taken down when darkness falls.
    • During the raising or lowering of the flag, a salute is customary, and it is appropriate to pause for a moment of reflection.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag during severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, as this may cause damage.
    • If the flag is wet, it should be dried before being flown again to prevent mildew and deterioration.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag is no longer fit for display due to wear or damage, it should be retired respectfully.
    • To retire the flag, conduct a dignified ceremony, which may include burning or burying the flag, depending on local customs or preferences.
    • Ensure that the flag is disposed of in a manner that honours its significance, reflecting the pride and respect it has represented.

By following these care instructions, you’ll keep your flag looking vibrant and well-preserved for years to come. Caring for your flag is a way of honouring the pride and tradition it represents.
