To maintain the quality and vibrant colours of your Grenada flag, please adhere to the following care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always use a mild detergent when washing the flag to reduce fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that may harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent it from snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Refrain from tumble drying, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Make sure the flag is completely dry before placing it away. Store it in a cool, dry, and secure area to prevent any moisture-related damage.
  3. Folding the Grenada Flag:
    • Begin by laying the flag on a flat surface with the front side facing down.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the edges neatly to ensure a straight fold.
    • Next, fold the flag in half again lengthwise, maintaining the alignment of the edges for a compact form.
    • Starting from the hoist (the side with the flagpole), fold the flag in a series of triangle shapes, similar to folding a paper flag, until you reach the end.
    • Tuck the final section of the flag into the last triangle fold to secure it in place, ensuring it remains neatly packaged and protected.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached when displayed to prevent unnecessary stress on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during severe weather conditions or overnight to preserve its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and taking the damaged one to a professional seamstress for repair.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant wear, think about purchasing a new one to ensure it looks great during important events.

Flying the Grenada Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flagpole is clean and free from any obstructions.
    • Using the Header with Loops: Thread the halyard through the reinforced loops at the top of the flag, then secure it tightly to prevent any slipping during windy conditions.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag into the pocket of the vertical sleeve, ensuring it is positioned correctly. Attach the sleeve to the halyard securely.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • Position the flagpole in an open area where it can fly freely without obstruction from trees or buildings.
    • Ensure that the flag is displayed in a prominent location, allowing it to be easily seen and appreciated.
    • When hanging the flag vertically or horizontally, always ensure that the flag’s design is oriented correctly facing outwards.
    • If flying multiple flags, place the Grenada flag in a position of honour, either to the right of the other flags or in the centre if it is the only flag.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the Grenada flag at half-mast, raise it to the top of the flagpole before lowering it to the halfway point.
    • Ensure the flag remains clearly visible and does not touch the ground.
    • This practice is often done to honour a person or event, so make sure to lower the flag back to full mast at the end of the mourning period.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Always raise the flag at sunrise, allowing it to be displayed throughout the day until sunset.
    • At sunset, the flag should be lowered with dignity and respect.
    • If you wish to display the flag overnight, ensure it is illuminated or take it down before nightfall.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag during severe weather, including heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, as these conditions can damage the fabric.
    • If inclement weather is expected, consider bringing the flag down to preserve its condition.
    • In windy conditions, ensure the flag is securely fastened and check for any signs of wear regularly.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag is worn or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired in a respectful manner.
    • A common method is to cut the flag into pieces, ensuring that the emblem and colours are no longer intact.
    • Consider conducting a small ceremony to honour the flag’s service, followed by a proper disposal, such as burning in a dignified manner or burying.

By following these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for years to come. Caring for your flag is not just about preservation; it’s also a way to honour the pride and heritage it represents.
