The Georgia Flag:

The flag of Georgia features a white field with a large red cross, representing the country’s Orthodox Christian heritage. This distinctive design is complemented by four smaller red crosses in each quadrant, symbolising the five holy wounds of Christ. Here are the key elements of the flag:
  • White Background: Represents purity, innocence, wisdom, and chastity.
  • Large Red Cross: The flag features a central cross representing St. George.
  • Four Smaller Crosses: Symbolises the four evangelists and Jesus Christ the Savior.

Available Finishes:

For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Georgia flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag and prevent fading. Avoid bleach or any strong chemicals that could damage the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to avoid snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Steer clear of tumble drying, as high heat may shrink or harm the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Make sure the flag is completely dry before storing. Store it in a cool, dry, and safe space to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Georgia Flag:
    • Start by holding the flag horizontally, ensuring that the corners are aligned and the fabric is smooth.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge. Ensure the edges are aligned, and the flag is now half its original height.
    • Fold the flag lengthwise once more, creating a narrow strip. Ensure the corners are neatly aligned for a clean fold.
    • Begin at the fly end (the end farthest from the flagpole) and make a triangular fold by bringing the bottom corner up to the opposite edge.
    • Continue folding the flag in a triangle pattern, ensuring each fold is tight and even. Repeat the triangular fold until you reach the hoist (the side where the flag is attached to the pole).
    • Once you reach the hoist, tuck the remaining fabric neatly into the folds to secure the flag and create a compact triangle shape.
    • After folding, the flag should resemble a tidy triangle with no loose edges.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp edges or rough surfaces that could cause tears or snags.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is tightly secured when displayed to avoid unnecessary tension on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: For better longevity, take the flag down during severe weather or overnight to protect it from damage.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or frayed edges, remove the flag and take it to a professional for repair.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows signs of significant wear, consider replacing it to maintain its appearance during important events.

Flying the Georgia Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • For Flags with Header and Loops: Attach the flag by hooking the reinforced loops onto the halyard clips. Ensure that the loops are securely fastened and evenly spaced to avoid tangling or slack during raising.
    • For Flags with Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flagpole through the sleeve, ensuring it fits snugly. The flag should move smoothly along the pole as it is raised. Make sure the sleeve is fully seated on the pole to prevent slipping.
    • Always raise the Georgia flag briskly and with dignity. It should be hoisted with confidence and respect, symbolising the strength of the nation.
    • The flag should never touch the ground while being raised, and it must be flown above any other flags if displayed with others, such as company or organisation flags.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • The Georgia flag should always be displayed in a prominent position, with the field of five red cross clearly visible.
    • If displayed indoors, the flag should be placed to the speaker’s right (audience’s left) and at the same height as other national flags.
  • Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
    • To fly the Georgia flag at half-mast, first raise it to the peak for a moment, then lower it to a position halfway between the top and bottom of the flagpole.
    • When lowering the flag from half-mast, it should first be raised to the peak again before being brought down fully.
    • This is typically done on days of mourning or in honour of notable figures. The decision to fly the flag at half-mast is often made by government officials or institutions.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Georgia flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset unless it is properly illuminated during the night.
    • When raising or lowering the flag, perform the task with respect and care, pausing briefly once it reaches the top or bottom position.
    • If displayed outdoors overnight, ensure it has proper lighting to honour the flag’s continuous display.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • The Georgia flag should not be flown during inclement weather, such as heavy rain, snow, or storms, unless it is an all-weather flag specifically designed for such conditions.
    • High winds can cause excessive wear and tear on the flag. It is advisable to lower the flag during such conditions to preserve its longevity.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Georgia flag becomes too worn, faded, or damaged to be displayed, it should be respectfully retired by burning it in a dignified manner.
    • Many communities or organisations, such as veterans’ groups, often hold flag retirement ceremonies. Participating in or arranging such a ceremony is a respectful way to honour the flag.
    • Never throw the flag in the rubbish. If unsure about proper disposal, contact a local government office or flag association for guidance.

By following these care instructions, your flag will retain its vibrant colours and excellent condition for years. Caring for your flag is not only about preserving it but also showing respect for the pride and heritage it represents.
