To maintain the vibrant colours and ensure the longevity of the Gambia flag, please adhere to the following care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always use a mild detergent when washing the flag to help reduce fading. Steer clear of bleach and harsh chemicals that may harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle using cold water. Place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to avoid snags.
    • Air Drying: Either lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Refrain from tumble drying, as high temperatures can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Make sure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Gambia Flag:
    • Start with a Clean Surface: Lay the flag face down on a clean, flat surface, ensuring it’s free from dirt or debris.
    • Fold in Half Lengthwise: Take the bottom edge of the flag and fold it up to meet the top edge, aligning the edges carefully. This creates a long rectangle.
    • Fold in Half Again: With the flag still in a vertical position, fold it in half lengthwise once more, keeping the design facing outwards. This should create a narrower rectangle.
    • Create Triangular Folds: Starting from the hoist side (the side with the flagpole), take the corner of the folded edge and fold it diagonally to form a triangle, ensuring the top edge aligns with the side of the flag.
    • Continue Triangular Folds: Repeat the triangular folding process, moving along the length of the flag. Each fold should form a triangle, and ensure that the flag is kept tight and flat as you fold.
    • Final Adjustments: Once you reach the end of the flag, tuck any excess fabric into the folds for a neat and compact finish.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that could lead to snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached when displayed to prevent undue strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Remove the flag during severe weather conditions or overnight to maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and take the damaged one to a professional seamstress for mending.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear, think about acquiring a new one to ensure it looks its best during important events.

Flying the Gambia Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring that the flagpole is clean and free from any obstructions.
    • Using the Header with Loops: Securely attach the loops at the top of the flag to the halyard or flagpole using sister clips, ensuring a tight fit to prevent slipping. Once attached, pull the halyard to raise the flag, ensuring it is aligned correctly as it ascends.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the vertical sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring it fits snugly without any gaps. Once in place, raise the flag by pulling the flagpole upwards, allowing the flag to unfurl naturally as it reaches the top.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displaying the Gambia flag, ensure it is positioned in a prominent location where it is easily visible to all.
    • The flag should be hung or displayed with the red stripe positioned at the top. When displayed on a wall, the flag should be oriented so that the red stripe is to the observer’s left.
    • If displayed alongside other flags, ensure the Gambia flag is either at the same height or higher than the others, symbolising respect.
    • Always ensure the flag is displayed in a manner that keeps it taut and free from wrinkles or folds.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole briefly before lowering it to the halfway point.
    • Ensure the flag is positioned at the correct height to signify mourning, allowing it to hang freely without touching the ground.
    • When it is time to take the flag down, raise it back to the top briefly before lowering it completely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Gambia flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset.
    • If flying the flag overnight, ensure it is properly illuminated with external lighting if it is not taken down, as this shows respect for the flag.
    • During daylight hours, raise the flag briskly and lower it slowly to maintain decorum.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag in extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain or strong winds, as these can damage the fabric.
    • If adverse weather conditions are forecasted, consider lowering the flag to protect its integrity.
    • Always inspect the flag for any signs of wear or damage after inclement weather before re-displaying it.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag has reached a state of disrepair or is no longer suitable for display, it is important to retire it respectfully.
    • The flag should be folded according to the proper folding instructions and then disposed of in a dignified manner, such as through burning in a private ceremony.
    • Ensure that the retirement of the flag is conducted in a manner that honours its significance and represents the pride of the nation.

By adhering to these care instructions, your flag will keep its bright colours and remain in excellent condition for many years. Caring for your flag is not just about preservation; it’s also about honouring the pride and heritage it embodies.
