To maintain the vibrant colours and ensure lasting quality of your Finland flag, please adhere to the following care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always use a mild detergent when washing the flag to help prevent fading. Refrain from using bleach or harsh chemicals that could harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. It’s best to place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to avoid snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as excessive heat may cause the fabric to shrink or become damaged.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep the flag in a cool, dry, and safe location to prevent moisture-related damage.
  3. Folding the Finland Flag:
    • Start Flat: Place the flag on a clean, flat surface with the blue Nordic cross facing up.
    • First Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge, ensuring the edges align perfectly.
    • Second Fold: With the flag still folded in half, take the left side and fold it over to the right side, creating a narrower rectangle.
    • Third Fold: Fold the flag in half once more from top to bottom, ensuring the edges remain aligned for a neat finish.
    • Final Fold: Depending on your storage preference, fold the flag into thirds or quarters. For thirds, bring one end towards the centre and then fold the other end over it. For quarters, simply fold it in half again after the third fold.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could lead to snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached when displayed to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Bring the flag inside during severe weather or overnight to maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and take the damaged one to a professional seamstress for repairs.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant wear, think about purchasing a new one to ensure it looks its best during important events.

Flying the Finland Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flagpole is clean and free from any debris.
    • Header with Loops: For flags with loops, thread the loops onto the halyard, ensuring each loop is evenly spaced to avoid sagging, and secure the flag in place with the clips.
    • Vertical Sleeve: For flags featuring a vertical sleeve, slide the flag onto the pole until it is fully extended, then fasten the flag at the top to prevent it from moving during windy conditions.
    • Raise the flag slowly and smoothly, taking care not to let it touch the ground.
    • Once at the top, ensure the flag is taut and displays the blue Nordic cross prominently.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • The Finland flag should be flown with the Nordic cross positioned horizontally, with the vertical portion of the cross shifted towards the hoist (the side closest to the flagpole).
    • If displaying multiple flags, the Finland flag should be placed in a position of honour, either at the highest point or to the left of other flags.
    • For indoor displays, consider using a flag stand to ensure it remains upright and visible.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it fully to the top of the pole before lowering it to the halfway point.
    • The half-mast position is a sign of mourning and should be respected during appropriate occasions, such as national days of remembrance.
    • When the flag is no longer needed at half-mast, raise it back to the top before lowering it completely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Finland flag should be raised at sunrise and taken down at sunset.
    • When raising the flag in the morning, do so promptly after sunrise, ensuring it is displayed throughout daylight hours.
    • If illuminated by a spotlight, the flag may remain displayed during the night, but it should still be taken down if the spotlight is not used.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • It is advisable to take down the flag during inclement weather, including heavy rain, snow, or strong winds, to protect it from damage.
    • If the flag is made from weather-resistant materials, ensure it is properly secured to prevent tearing or fraying in high winds.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag becomes worn or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired in a dignified manner.
    • A respectful way to retire the flag is to burn it in a private ceremony, allowing it to be disposed of with honour.
    • After retirement, consider replacing it with a new flag to maintain the dignity and representation of Finland.

By following these guidelines, your flag will retain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for many years. Caring for your flag is not just about preservation; it’s also about honouring the pride and heritage it represents.
