For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Fiji flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always wash the flag using a mild detergent to reduce fading. Steer clear of bleach or harsh chemicals that may harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Refrain from tumble drying, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is thoroughly dry prior to storage. Store it in a cool, dry environment to avoid any moisture-related issues.
  3. Folding the Fiji Flag:
    • Prepare a Clean Surface: Begin by laying the flag on a flat, clean surface to prevent any dirt or debris from affecting the fabric.
    • Align the Edges: Smooth out the flag to eliminate any wrinkles, ensuring the edges are aligned properly.
    • First Fold: Take the flag and fold it in half lengthwise, bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge. Make sure the flag’s design is on the inside of the fold.
    • Second Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise again, creating a narrower strip. Again, ensure the design remains on the inside.
    • Create Triangles: Starting from the open end, fold the flag into a triangle by bringing the bottom corner up towards the top edge. Adjust as needed to keep the sides even.
    • Continue Folding: Keep folding the flag over itself, working your way down the length of the strip until you reach the end, creating a neat triangle shape.
    • Secure the Flag: Tuck any loose ends of the fabric into the folds to keep the flag secure and protected from dust or damage.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that may cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly fastened when displayed to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during severe weather or overnight to maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and consulting a professional seamstress for repairs.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant wear, think about purchasing a new one to ensure it looks its best during important events.

Flying the Fiji Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Select a Flagpole: Choose a sturdy and appropriate flagpole that is tall enough for visibility and has a secure base.
    • Using the Header with Loops: If your flag has a header with loops, thread the halyard through the reinforced loops, ensuring a secure fit before raising the flag.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve: For flags with a vertical sleeve, slide the flag onto the pole so that it fits snugly in the sleeve, and then use the halyard to hoist it to the desired height.
    • Raise Slowly and Carefully: Hoist the flag slowly while ensuring it doesn’t touch the ground. Allow the flag to unfurl fully as it ascends.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • Position the Flag Correctly: The flag should be displayed with the Union Jack on the left (hoist) side and the coat of arms on the right (fly) side from the viewer’s perspective.
    • Maintain Visibility: Ensure the flag is clearly visible from all angles and not obstructed by nearby structures or trees.
    • Avoid Overcrowding: If displaying multiple flags, maintain adequate spacing between them to allow each flag to be appreciated without obstruction.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • Raising the Flag to Full Mast First: To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole and then lower it to the half-mast position.
    • Identify the Half-Mast Position: The flag should be lowered to approximately halfway down the flagpole. This symbolises mourning and respect.
    • Lowering the Flag at Half-Mast: To remove the flag, first raise it back to full mast before lowering it completely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Raise at Sunrise: The flag should be raised at sunrise to honour the start of the day.
    • Lower at Sunset: The flag should be lowered at sunset to signify the end of the day, ensuring it is not left out overnight unless it is illuminated.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Check the Weather Forecast: Be aware of wind conditions, rain, or storms. Avoid flying the flag in severe weather to prevent damage.
    • Bring Down in Extreme Conditions: If adverse weather is expected, remove the flag promptly to protect its integrity.
    • Use Weather-Resistant Flags: If displaying the flag outdoors frequently, consider using weather-resistant materials to prolong its lifespan.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • Assess the Flag’s Condition: If the flag becomes tattered, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • Ceremonial Retirement: Arrange for a proper ceremony to retire the flag, which may include cutting it into pieces and burning the remains in a dignified manner.
    • Replace with a New Flag: After retirement, consider replacing it with a new flag to continue showcasing national pride.

By adhering to these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for many years. Caring for your flag goes beyond preservation; it’s a way to honour the pride and heritage it represents.
