To maintain the vibrant colours and lasting quality of your Ethiopia flag, please adhere to the following care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always use a mild detergent when washing the flag to reduce fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that may harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Ethiopia Flag:
    • Prepare a Clean Surface: Begin by finding a clean, flat surface to lay the flag on, ensuring it is free from any dirt or debris.
    • Position the Flag: Lay the flag out with the Ethiopian emblem facing down. This ensures that the folds will maintain the design’s integrity.
    • First Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge. Align the edges carefully to avoid creasing.
    • Second Fold: With the flag still folded, bring the left edge over to the right edge to create a narrower rectangle. Make sure the corners are aligned neatly.
    • Third Fold: Fold the flag in half again, this time bringing the bottom edge up to the top edge of the newly formed rectangle. Press down gently to create a crisp fold.
    • Final Folds: For larger flags, continue to fold in half until the flag reaches a manageable size. If necessary, roll the flag gently to prevent creases and maintain the design’s appearance.
    • Secure the Fold: Once folded, consider securing it with a soft cloth strap or a rubber band to keep it neatly compact while stored.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that could lead to snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is properly fastened when displayed to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take down the flag during extreme weather or overnight to protect its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and taking the damaged one to a professional seamstress for repair.
    • Replacement: When the flag shows considerable wear, think about purchasing a new one to keep its appearance fresh during significant occasions.

Flying the Ethiopia Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flagpole is securely mounted and in good condition.
    • Using Header with Loops: If your flag features a header with loops, simply thread the halyard through the reinforced loops and secure the clips. This allows for a quick and stable attachment to the flagpole.
    • Using Vertical Sleeve: For flags with a vertical sleeve, slide the flag down onto the flagpole until it reaches the desired height. Ensure the flag is positioned correctly to allow it to flutter freely.
    • Slowly raise the flag while keeping it taut to prevent tangling. Once at the top, secure the halyard to prevent the flag from slipping down.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • Ensure the Ethiopian emblem, with the blue disc facing outward, is positioned correctly.
    • When displaying the flag, ensure it is at eye level or higher to promote visibility and respect.
    • If displaying multiple flags, the Ethiopian flag should be flown at the same height or higher than other flags, positioning it to the right of the observer when displayed alongside others.
    • Avoid obstructing the flag with trees, buildings, or other objects to allow it to flutter freely in the wind.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise the flag fully to the top of the pole, then lower it to the halfway point.
    • Ensure the flag remains at half-mast for a period of mourning or as directed by official guidelines.
    • When lowering the flag back to the full position, always raise it back to the top before bringing it down completely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Raise the flag at sunrise, ensuring it is fully unfurled and raised briskly to signify the start of the day.
    • Lower the flag at sunset, making sure it is brought down with dignity and care. Fold or store it properly after lowering to preserve its condition.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Be mindful of adverse weather conditions. Remove the flag during severe weather, including storms, heavy winds, or snow, to protect it from damage.
    • If the flag becomes wet from rain, allow it to dry thoroughly before storing to prevent mildew or deterioration.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag is worn or damaged beyond repair, it is essential to retire it respectfully.
    • The flag can be ceremonially burned or buried to honour its symbolism. Ensure this is done in a private and respectful manner.
    • Consider contacting local veterans’ organisations or flag retirement ceremonies in your area for proper disposal methods.

By following these care guidelines, your flag will maintain its vivid colours and remain in excellent condition for years to come. Caring for your flag is not only about preservation but also about honouring the pride and heritage it represents.
