For enduring quality and vibrant colours of your Estonia flag, please adhere to these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always use a mild detergent when washing the flag to help prevent fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to dry naturally. Refrain from tumble drying, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Estonia Flag:
    • Lay Flat: Begin by placing the flag on a clean, flat surface, ensuring it is free of any dirt or debris. The flag should be facing upwards with the blue stripe at the top.
    • Fold in Half Lengthwise: Carefully fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the two longer edges together. Align the edges neatly, ensuring that the design remains on the outside.
    • Create a Smaller Fold: Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, making sure the blue side is still facing out. This will create a narrower flag.
    • Begin Triangular Folds: Starting at the hoist end (the end with the grommets or where it attaches to the flagpole), make a triangular fold by bringing the bottom corner up to the top edge of the folded flag.
    • Continue Folding: Flip the triangular fold over, then take the next section of the flag and repeat the triangular fold. Continue this process, working your way along the flag until you reach the end.
    • Secure the Final Fold: Tuck the last triangle into the folds to hold it securely in place. Ensure that the flag maintains a neat and compact shape.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached when displayed to avoid unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during extreme weather conditions or overnight to help maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and consult a professional seamstress for repairs.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant signs of wear, think about purchasing a new one to keep it looking its best for important occasions.

Flying the Estonia Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flagpole is clean and free of any obstructions.
    • Using the Header with Loops:
      • Slide the reinforced loops at the top of the flag onto the flagpole, ensuring they are securely positioned.
      • Attach the sister clips to the flagpole for added stability, then pull the halyard to raise the flag.
    • Using the Vertical Sleeve:
      • Slide the flag into the sleeve until it is fully inserted and the flag is taut.
      • Secure the pole into the sleeve, then pull the halyard to elevate the flag, ensuring it is displayed properly.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displayed on a flagpole, ensure that the Estonia flag is the highest flag flown if there are multiple flags, as per protocol.
    • Make sure the blue stripe is oriented to the top of the flag.
    • The flag should be kept clean and free of wrinkles, allowing its vibrant colours to shine.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole and then lower it to the half-mast position.
    • This position is typically one-third of the distance down from the top of the pole, though specific guidelines may vary.
    • When the period of mourning ends, return the flag to the top of the flagpole before lowering it entirely.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • The Estonia flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset to show respect and honour.
    • If you cannot fly the flag during these times, it is essential to raise it before sunset and ensure it is illuminated if displayed overnight.
    • If the flag is flown at night, consider using a light source to illuminate it, as it shows respect for the national symbol.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag during severe weather conditions, such as strong winds, heavy rain, or snow, which can damage the fabric.
    • If inclement weather is forecasted, consider taking the flag down to prevent wear and tear.
    • In particularly windy conditions, ensure that the flag is securely fastened to prevent it from becoming tattered or damaged.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag becomes frayed, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • A dignified method for retiring the flag involves burning it in a private ceremony, ensuring it is done with honour and respect.
    • After burning, bury the ashes in a suitable location or keep them in a commemorative container to pay tribute to the flag’s significance.

By adhering to these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for many years to come. Caring for your flag is not only about preservation but also about honouring the pride and heritage it represents.
