For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the East Timor flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always clean the flag using a mild detergent to reduce fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Refrain from tumble drying, as high heat may shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry location to protect against moisture damage.
  3. Folding the East Timor Flag:
    • Preparation: Lay the flag down on a clean, flat surface with the front side (the side with the symbols) facing downwards.
    • First Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, ensuring that the edges are aligned. This creates a long, narrow rectangle.
    • Second Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise again, making sure to keep the edges aligned. You should now have a thinner rectangle.
    • Create Triangular Folds: Starting at the hoist end (the side where the header loops or sleeve is located), begin folding the flag into triangles:
      • Take the corner of the flag and fold it over to form a triangle, aligning the edge with the bottom of the flag.
      • Continue folding the remaining section in a triangular fashion, creating a series of triangles down the length of the flag.
    • Final Adjustment: Once you reach the end of the flag, tuck the last flap into the folds to secure it neatly.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that may cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly fastened when displayed to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during extreme weather conditions or overnight to maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and taking the damaged one to a professional seamstress for repair.
    • Replacement: When the flag begins to show significant wear, consider purchasing a new one to keep its appearance vibrant for important occasions.

Flying the East Timor Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flag is properly attached to the flagpole using the designated method (header loops or vertical sleeve).
    • Hold the flag in a way that prevents it from touching the ground, as this is considered disrespectful.
    • With the help of another person, lift the flag slowly and evenly, allowing it to unfurl completely as it ascends.
    • Once the flag reaches the top of the flagpole, secure it in place to prevent it from slipping.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • Ensure the flag is flown in a prominent position where it can be easily seen by the public.
    • If displaying multiple flags, ensure the East Timor Flag is at the same height or higher than other flags to show respect.
    • The flag should be positioned so that the black triangle is always on the left side when viewed from the front, ensuring the flag is displayed correctly.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole briefly before lowering it to the halfway point.
    • This action signifies mourning or respect and should be done during times of national mourning or as instructed by local authorities.
    • Always return the flag to the top position when the period of mourning is over.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Raise the flag at sunrise, ensuring it is displayed fully by the time the sun is visible.
    • Lower the flag at sunset, ensuring it is removed from the flagpole or taken down before night falls unless illuminated.
    • If the flag is flown at night, it must be properly illuminated to maintain its visibility and respect.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid displaying the flag during extreme weather conditions, such as storms or high winds, which could cause damage to the fabric.
    • If strong winds are anticipated, consider lowering the flag to prevent it from becoming torn or frayed.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the East Timor flag becomes worn, frayed, or no longer suitable for display, it should be retired respectfully.
    • The flag can be burned in a dignified manner, ensuring that the act is performed with respect and in accordance with local customs or regulations.
    • Consider contacting a local veterans’ organisation or community group that may have specific procedures for the respectful disposal of flags.

By following these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and stay in excellent condition for many years. Caring for your flag is not only about preservation but also about honouring the pride and heritage it embodies.
