To maintain the vibrant colours and quality of the Djibouti flag, please adhere to the following care instructions:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to wash the flag to minimise fading. Avoid bleach or any harsh chemicals that could harm the colours.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent any snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Refrain from tumble drying, as high heat may shrink or damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Make sure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place to protect it from moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Djibouti Flag:
    • Prepare the Flag: Begin by laying the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface to avoid dirt and damage.
    • Align the Flag: Ensure that the flag’s white triangle is positioned on the left side.
    • Fold in Half Lengthwise: Gently fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the top edge down to meet the bottom edge, making sure the colours remain on the outside.
    • Create a Centre Fold: With the flag still folded, take the bottom edge and fold it up to meet the top edge, forming a narrower strip. Ensure the colours stay visible.
    • Triangle Folds: Starting from the fly end (the end opposite the hoist), create triangular folds by folding the flag over itself diagonally. Make the first fold about 30cm wide.
    • Continue Folding: Continue making diagonal folds, alternating direction until the entire length of the flag has been folded into triangles. Each fold should be firm but gentle to maintain the integrity of the fabric.
    • Final Shape: Once you’ve folded the flag into a compact triangular shape, tuck any loose ends neatly to secure the folds.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that may snag or tear the fabric.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached when displayed to avoid unnecessary strain on the material.
    • Minimise Exposure: Bring the flag down during severe weather conditions or overnight to maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and taking the damaged one to a professional seamstress for repair.
    • Replacement: If the flag shows significant wear, it may be time to purchase a new one to maintain its appearance during important events.

Flying the Djibouti Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Ensure the flagpole is clean and free of any obstructions.
    • If your flag has reinforced loops, carefully thread the flag onto the pole, ensuring that the top of the flag is secured with the loops positioned correctly.
    • For flags with a vertical sleeve, simply slide the flag down onto the pole until it reaches the desired height, ensuring it is snugly fitted.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • Position the flag so that it is fully extended and not bunched up, allowing for proper visibility of all colours and symbols.
    • Ensure the white triangle is on the hoist side (left), with the red star, blue and green portions clearly visible to observers.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To honour special occasions or commemorate individuals, first raise the flag to the top of the pole and then lower it halfway down.
    • Ensure the flag remains half-mast for the duration of the observance and raise it back to full height when the ceremony concludes.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • It is customary to raise the flag at sunrise and lower it at sunset, signifying respect and honour.
    • Ensure the flag is flown during daylight hours unless illuminated at night, allowing it to be visible and maintain its dignity.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Monitor weather forecasts, as the flag should be taken down during severe weather conditions, such as storms, heavy rain, or high winds, to prevent damage.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the flag becomes frayed, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it is essential to retire it respectfully.
    • Follow proper retirement procedures by folding the flag neatly and burning it in a dignified manner or, if preferred, burying it in a special location as a sign of respect and honour for the symbol it represents.

By following these care guidelines, your flag will retain its vivid colours and remain in excellent condition for years to come. Caring for your flag not only preserves its beauty but also honours the pride and heritage it represents.
