For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Costa Rica flag, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Gentle Washing: Always clean the flag with a mild detergent to minimise colour fading. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals that could harm the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle using cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as excessive heat may shrink or damage the material.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Folding the Costa Rica Flag:
    • Begin by laying the flag flat on a clean, dry surface with the design facing up.
    • Make sure the flag is completely dry to prevent any moisture from causing damage during storage.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, ensuring that the two long edges are aligned perfectly.
    • Smooth out any wrinkles or creases to keep the folds neat.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise again, bringing the folded edge back to meet the opposite edge.
    • Starting from the hoist side (the side where the loops or sleeve are located), create triangular folds by bringing the bottom corner of the flag up to meet the top edge.
    • Continue this process, alternating sides, until you reach the end of the flag. Each triangle should be neatly aligned with the previous one.
    • Once the final triangle is reached, tuck it securely into the folds to keep the flag compact and prevent it from unfolding.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that could lead to snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is firmly attached when displayed to avoid any unnecessary strain on the fabric.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during severe weather or overnight to maintain its condition.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and taking the damaged one to a professional seamstress for mending.
    • Replacement: When the flag exhibits significant wear, think about purchasing a new one to keep its appearance fresh during special occasions.

Flying the Costa Rica Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Begin by ensuring the flag is clean and free from any creases or wrinkles.
    • Attach the flag securely to the halyard or rope, ensuring the flag is oriented correctly with the blue band at the top and the coat of arms position on the left side of the flag.
    • Raise the flag briskly while keeping it taut to prevent it from tangling or snagging on the flagpole.
    • Once the flag is at the top, secure the halyard or rope to prevent it from slipping back down.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • When displayed outdoors, ensure the flag is mounted on a sturdy flagpole that can withstand various weather conditions.
    • The Costa Rica flag should be flown prominently, preferably at eye level or higher, to honour its significance.
    • If displayed alongside other flags, ensure the Costa Rican flag is at the same height or higher than the others, and place it to the left (the viewer’s right) of any other national flags.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole and then lower it to the halfway point.
    • This gesture is often used to commemorate significant events or the passing of notable individuals.
    • Ensure the flag is visible and well-maintained even when displayed at half-mast, as a sign of respect.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Raise the flag at sunrise and lower it at sunset, demonstrating respect for the symbol it represents.
    • If the flag is illuminated at night, it may remain hoisted after dark, but ensure it is properly lit to maintain visibility and honour.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag during severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, to prevent damage.
    • If bad weather is forecasted, take down the flag and store it safely until conditions improve.
    • When flying the flag in windy areas, consider using a flag made of durable materials designed to withstand harsher conditions.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • When the Costa Rica flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
    • A proper retirement ceremony typically involves burning the flag in a dignified manner, ensuring it is done safely and respectfully.
    • After burning, the ashes can be buried or disposed of in a respectful location, honouring the flag’s significance and the pride it represents.

By adhering to these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for years to come. Caring for your flag is not only about preservation but also about honouring the pride and heritage it represents.
