For enduring quality and vibrant colours of the Colombia flag, please adhere to the following care guidelines:
- Cleaning:
- Gentle Washing: Always clean the flag using a mild detergent to minimise colour fading. Steer clear of bleach or harsh chemicals that can harm the fabric’s vibrancy.
- Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent it from snagging.
- Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high temperatures can shrink or damage the fabric.
- Storage:
- Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from moisture to prevent any damage.
- Folding the Colombia Flag:
- Start with the Flag Flat: Lay the Colombia flag on a clean, flat surface.
- Fold in Half Lengthwise: Carefully bring the bottom edge of the flag up to meet the top edge, creating a long rectangle. Ensure the edges align perfectly.
- Fold in Half Again: Take the rectangle and fold it in half once more, this time bringing the right side over to the left, which allows the flag to become a narrower rectangle.
- Create a Triangular Fold: Starting at the open end, fold one corner of the flag diagonally towards the opposite edge to form a triangle.
- Continue Triangular Folds: With the triangle formed, keep folding the flag in a triangular manner, working your way down the length of the flag until you reach the end. Each fold should create a triangle, allowing for a compact and neat finish.
- Final Adjustment: Tuck any loose fabric into the folds to ensure a secure and tidy presentation, making it easy to store or display as needed.
- Handling:
- Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could lead to snags or tears.
- Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely attached when displayed, preventing undue strain on the fabric.
- Minimise Exposure: Bring the flag down during severe weather or overnight to help preserve its condition.
- Repairs:
- Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and taking the damaged one to a professional seamstress for mending.
- Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear, it’s advisable to purchase a new one to keep its appearance fresh for important events.
Flying the Colombia Flag:
- Raising the Flag:
- Begin by ensuring the flag is clean and free of any creases or wrinkles.
- Attach the flag securely to the halyard (the rope used to raise and lower the flag) using the provided loops or clips.
- Stand facing the flagpole and slowly raise the flag briskly while ensuring it does not touch the ground.
- Once the flag reaches the top, ensure it is securely fastened to prevent it from slipping.
- Displaying the Flag:
- Ensure that the yellow stripe is at the top, followed by the blue stripe in the middle and the red stripe at the bottom.
- The Colombia flag should be flown in a position of prominence, ideally at the highest point on a flagpole or in a visible area if displayed indoors.
- Ensure the flag is well-lit, especially if displayed at night. A spotlight can be used to illuminate it appropriately.
- When displaying multiple flags, the Colombia flag should always be flown at the same height or higher than other flags, and it should be to the left of the observer’s perspective.
- Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
- To fly the flag at half-mast, raise it fully to the top for a moment before lowering it to the halfway point on the flagpole.
- Ensure the flag is level at the halfway point and remains securely attached to the halyard.
- When the period of mourning has ended, raise the flag fully again before lowering it for storage.
- Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
- The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. If illuminated at night, it can remain up but should always be lowered if not properly lit.
- Make sure to observe a moment of silence or respect when raising or lowering the flag, acknowledging its significance.
- Weather Conditions:
- Avoid flying the flag during extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, snow, or strong winds to prevent damage.
- If bad weather is anticipated, consider taking the flag down to ensure it remains in good condition.
- If the flag does get wet, allow it to dry completely before folding or storing it.
- Retirement of the Flag:
- When the flag becomes frayed, faded, or otherwise damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
- Conduct a ceremony to properly dispose of the flag, which can include burning it in a dignified manner while reciting the national anthem or another respectful tribute.
- Ensure that the flag is retired in a way that honours its symbolism and the pride it represents.
By adhering to these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vivid colours and remain in excellent condition for many years to come. Caring for your flag is not only about preservation but also about honouring the pride and heritage it embodies.
