For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Chad flag, please follow these care guidelines:
- Cleaning:
- Gentle Washing: Wash the flag using a mild detergent to prevent fading. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals that could damage the colours.
- Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to avoid snagging.
- Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Refrain from tumble drying as high heat can shrink or harm the fabric.
- Storage:
- Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry, and secure place to prevent moisture damage.
- Folding the Chad Flag:
- Lay Flat: Begin by spreading the flag out on a flat surface to smooth out any creases.
- Fold Lengthwise: Fold the flag in half lengthwise so that the top and bottom edges align, ensuring the colours are visible and aligned.
- Create a Narrow Strip: Fold the flag again lengthwise to form a narrow strip. The fold should be even and align the stripes neatly.
- Fold into a Triangle: Starting from one end, fold the flag diagonally in a triangular shape, maintaining the alignment of the colours and keeping the flag’s design visible.
- Continue Folding: Continue folding the flag in triangular sections, working from one end to the other. Each fold should be about the same size to keep the flag compact and uniform.
- Finish Neatly: When you reach the end, tuck any remaining fabric neatly into the folds to ensure a smooth, tidy appearance.
- Handling:
- Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that may cause snags or tears.
- Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is firmly attached during display to prevent any undue stress on the fabric.
- Minimise Exposure: Remove the flag during extreme weather conditions or overnight to preserve its condition.
- Repairs:
- Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, repair the flag or take it to a professional seamstress for mending.
- Replacement: When the flag shows substantial wear, consider replacing it to maintain its appearance for important occasions.
Flying the Chad Flag:
- Raising the Flag:
- Prepare the Flag: Ensure the flag is clean and free of any damage before raising.
- Attach Securely: Attach the flag to the halyard or pole securely, making sure it is properly aligned with the hoisting mechanism.
- Raise Smoothly: Hoist the flag smoothly and evenly, avoiding any sudden jerks that could damage the fabric. Raise it to the top of the pole.
- Displaying the Flag:
- Proper Positioning: Ensure the flag is displayed with the correct orientation, with the blue stripe on the left side (hoist side).
- Respectful Display: Ensure the flag does not touch the ground or any other object. It should be flown in a position of honour and visibility.
- Full Extension: Allow the flag to fly fully extended in the breeze to ensure the design is visible and not folded or creased.
- Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
- Initial Raising: Raise the flag to the top of the pole before lowering it to half-mast. This is a sign of respect and follows traditional protocol.
- Position: Lower the flag to a point halfway between the top and bottom of the pole. Ensure it remains visible and does not touch the ground.
- Final Raising: When the period of mourning or tribute is over, raise the flag back to the top of the pole before taking it down.
- Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
- Sunrise: Raise the flag at sunrise or just before, to ensure it is flying as the day begins.
- Sunset: Lower the flag at sunset or just before dark. The flag should not be left flying after dark unless properly illuminated.
- Weather Conditions:
- Strong Winds: Avoid flying the flag in strong winds or storms to prevent damage. Take the flag down if severe weather conditions are expected.
- Rain and Snow: While the flag is designed to withstand various conditions, it’s best to take it down during heavy rain or snow to prevent water damage and freezing.
- Retirement of the Flag:
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the flag for signs of wear and tear. When it becomes tattered or damaged, it should be retired respectfully.
- Proper Disposal: Retire the flag by burning it in a dignified manner or take it to an organisation that can handle the disposal respectfully.
- Replacement: Replace the flag with a new one to ensure continued respect and honour for the Chad flag.
By adhering to these guidelines, your flag will retain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for years. Caring for your flag not only preserves its appearance but also honours the pride and heritage it represents.
