For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Burundi flag, please follow these care guidelines:
- Cleaning:
- Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag to prevent colour fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage the fabric.
- Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snags.
- Air Drying: Allow the flag to air dry by laying it flat or hanging it up. Do not use a tumble dryer, as high heat can cause shrinkage or damage.
- Storage:
- Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from moisture to prevent damage.
- Folding the Burundi Flag:
- Prepare the Flag: Lay the flag out flat on a clean, smooth surface with the design facing upwards.
- Initial Fold: Fold the flag lengthwise in half, aligning the top edge with the bottom edge to form a long, narrow strip.
- Second Fold: Fold the flag lengthwise once more, bringing the left edge over to meet the right edge, creating a narrower strip.
- Final Fold: Starting from one end, carefully roll the flag tightly towards the opposite end, ensuring the design remains aligned and visible.
- Secure the Fold: If needed, secure the rolled flag with a soft tie or band to keep it in place and prevent it from unfolding.
- Handling:
- Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces to prevent snags or tears.
- Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly secured when displayed to avoid undue stress on the fabric.
- Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during extreme weather conditions or overnight to maintain its condition.
- Repairs:
- Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider mending the flag yourself or consult a professional seamstress for repairs.
- Replacement: If the flag shows significant wear, replace it with a new one to ensure it remains impressive during special occasions.
Flying the Burundi Flag:
- Raising the Flag:
- Preparation: Ensure the flagpole is clean and free from obstructions before raising the flag.
- Attachment: Securely attach the flag to the halyard (rope) or flagpole using the appropriate fittings, ensuring that the flag’s design is properly oriented.
- Hoisting: Gently raise the flag until it reaches the top of the flagpole. Avoid jerking the rope to prevent damage to the flag.
- Displaying the Flag:
- Orientation: Ensure the flag is flown with the white saltire visible and the red and green sections properly aligned. The flag should be fully unfurled and not touch the ground.
- Position: Display the flag in a prominent position where it can be seen from a distance, preferably at a height that allows it to be fully visible.
- Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
- Raising to Half-Mast: First, raise the flag to the top of the flagpole briefly before lowering it to the halfway point. This signifies the flag’s temporary position at half-mast.
- Duration: The flag should remain at half-mast for the duration of the mourning period or as required by protocol.
- Hoisting to Full Mast: Once the period ends, raise the flag back to the top of the flagpole before lowering it for removal.
- Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
- Sunrise: The flag should be raised to the top of the pole at sunrise to signify the start of the day.
- Sunset: Lower the flag at sunset to signify the end of the day. Avoid leaving the flag flying overnight unless it is illuminated by a spotlight.
- Weather Conditions:
- Wind: In high winds, consider lowering the flag or securing it to prevent damage. Strong gusts can cause wear and tear.
- Rain and Storm: It is advisable to take the flag down during heavy rain or storm to prevent water damage and accumulation. Allow it to dry thoroughly before reflying.
- Retirement of the Flag:
- Condition Check: If the flag becomes tattered, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired.
- Respectful Disposal: Retire the flag with dignity by either burning it in a respectful manner or contacting a local organisation that handles flag retirements. Ensure the flag’s disposal is in line with established protocols and shows respect for the national symbol.
By adhering to these guidelines, your flag will retain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for years to come. Proper care honours the pride and heritage represented by your flag.
