To maintain the lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Bahamas flag, please follow these care guidelines:
- Cleaning:
- Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent when washing the flag to minimise fading. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals.
- Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging.
- Drying: Air dry the flag by laying it flat or hanging it. Refrain from using a tumble dryer, as high heat can cause shrinkage and damage the fabric.
- Storage:
- Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry, and safe place.
- Folding the Bahamas Flag:
- Begin by laying the flag out flat on a clean, dry surface with the black triangle at the left corner.
- Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the top and bottom edges so that the black triangle remains on the left side.
- Fold the flag in half lengthwise again, making sure the edges align neatly and the black triangle is still on the left.
- Starting from the end opposite the black triangle, make a series of diagonal folds, creating triangular sections. Each fold should be approximately the same width.
- Continue folding in this manner until you reach the end of the flag. Ensure that the black triangle remains visible at the top of the folded flag.
- Tuck any excess fabric into the folds to create a neat and compact triangular shape, with the black triangle prominently displayed.
- Handling:
- Protect from Sharp Objects: Ensure the flag is kept away from sharp edges or surfaces that could potentially cause snags, tears, or abrasions.
- Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely hoisted and freely flying.
- Flag Exposure: Reduce exposure to harsh weather by taking down the flag in the evening or during extreme weather conditions.
- Repairs:
- Minor Repairs: If you notice any wear or fraying, replace the flag with a spare and take the damaged one to a seamstress for professional repairs.
- Replacement: When the flag nears the end of its life, consider ordering a new one to ensure you’re ready for future celebrations or events.
Flying the Bahamas Flag:
- Raising the Flag:
- Hoist the flag briskly up the flagpole, ensuring it does not touch the ground.
- Elevate the flag to the top of the pole, giving it a moment to flutter fully as it reaches its position.
- Secure the flag properly to prevent it from becoming tangled or damaged.
- Displaying the Flag:
- Ensure the flag is displayed in a manner that allows it to be fully visible and respected, with the black triangle positioned to the left of observers.
- If displaying the flag on a horizontal pole, ensure it hangs freely without obstruction.
- Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
- Raise the flag to the top of the pole briefly before lowering it to the half-mast position.
- The half-mast position should be at the midpoint of the pole. Ensure the flag is symmetrical and not touching the pole or ground.
- Return the flag to full-mast position before lowering it completely at the end of the day or after the mourning period.
- Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
- Raise the flag to full-mast at sunrise, ensuring it is displayed proudly throughout the day.
- Lower the flag to the half-mast position at sunset if required, and bring it down fully at the end of the day.
- Never leave the flag flying unattended during the night unless properly illuminated.
- Weather Conditions:
- Avoid flying the flag in severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, which can cause damage.
- In adverse weather, take down the flag to prevent unnecessary wear and tear.
- Retirement of the Flag:
- When the flag becomes worn or damaged beyond repair, retire it respectfully by burning it in a dignified manner or by following local customs for flag disposal.
- Ensure that the flag is replaced with a new one to maintain its symbolic presence and respect.
By adhering to these care instructions, the flag will remain in excellent condition, maintaining its vibrant colours and durability over time. Remember, the flag is a symbol of pride and identity. The care you give it reflects the respect and value you place on your heritage.
