Show Your Love for Åland with Our Knitted Polyester Åland Flag

The Åland Islands, an autonomous region of Finland, are known for their unique blend of Swedish and Finnish culture, picturesque archipelago landscapes, and a strong maritime heritage. These islands hold a special place in the hearts of those who cherish the harmony between nature and tradition. Our Knitted Polyester Åland Flag embodies this spirit, making it ideal for displaying your pride.

The Åland Flag:

The Åland flag symbolises the region’s rich history and cultural identity. The flag’s design is simple yet deeply meaningful:
  • Blue Background: Represents the surrounding sea that embraces the Åland Islands.
  • Yellow or Golden Cross: Symbolises the archipelago’s historical ties to the Kingdom of Sweden.
  • Red Cross within the Yellow Cross: Reflects Finland and its enduring connection with the Åland Islands.

Available Finishes:

  • Vertical Sleeve: Designed with a discreet pocket along the edge, this finish easily slides onto flagpoles with diameters up to 28mm. For different pole sizes, contact us, and we’ll tailor the sleeve to your specifications.

For lasting quality and vibrant colours, please follow these care guidelines:

  1. Cleaning:
    • Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent to avoid fading, and never apply bleach or similar products.
    • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, use a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
    • Drying: Air dry the flag by laying it flat or hanging it. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can cause shrinkage and damage the fabric.
  2. Storage:
    • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  3. Folding the Åland Flag:
    • Start by laying the flag on a clean, flat surface with the design side facing down.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise so that the two shorter edges align, ensuring the design is inside.
    • Smooth out any wrinkles and make sure the edges are neatly aligned.
    • Fold the flag in half again lengthwise to create a long, narrow strip. This helps to keep the flag compact and manageable.
    • Starting from one end of the strip, begin folding the flag into triangular sections. Each fold should be approximately the same size, with the triangle’s base aligning with the previous fold.
    • Continue folding the flag into a series of overlapping triangles until you reach the end of the strip.
    • Once folded, tuck the final edge under the last triangle to secure the folds in place, ensuring the flag is neatly compacted and the design is protected.
  4. Handling:
    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or surfaces that may cause snags or tears.
    • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly hoisted and free of obstructions.
    • Flag Exposure: Limit exposure to harsh weather conditions and take down the flag in extreme weather or at night.
  5. Repairs:
    • Minor Repairs: For minor wear or fraying, replace the flag with a spare and take the damaged one to a professional for repairs.
    • Replacement: As the flag ages, consider ordering a new one to ensure a fresh appearance for future events or celebrations.

Flying the Åland Flag:

  • Raising the Flag:
    • Ensure the flagpole and its fittings are clean and in good condition before raising the flag.
    • Securely attach the flag to the halyard or pole using the appropriate method for your flag’s finish (loops or sleeve).
    • Raise the flag smoothly and steadily, taking care to prevent any snags or tangles. Ensure the flag is fully unfurled and visible.
  • Displaying the Flag:
    • Position the flag with the design facing outward, so it is clearly visible from the front.
    • Ensure the flag is flown at a height that allows it to be seen clearly, but not so high that it becomes difficult to manage or maintain.
  • Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
    • Raise the flag to the peak of the flagpole first.
    • Gradually lower the flag to the half-mast position, which is halfway down the pole.
    • Keep the flag at half-mast for the duration specified for the occasion or event. Raise it to full mast at the end of the commemoration or mourning period.
  • Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
    • Raise the flag to full mast at sunrise, ensuring it is displayed fully and proudly as the day begins.
    • Lower the flag at sunset or before dusk to show respect. If the flag is illuminated, it can be flown after dark; otherwise, it should be taken down.
  • Weather Conditions:
    • Avoid flying the flag in extremely high winds to prevent damage. If strong winds are expected, consider taking the flag down to protect it.
    • If the flag becomes wet or covered in snow, take it down and allow it to dry completely before reflying it. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause wear and fading.
  • Retirement of the Flag:
    • Regularly inspect the flag for signs of wear, such as fraying or fading. When the flag becomes too damaged, it should be retired.
    • Retire the flag with dignity. The traditional method is to burn the flag in a respectful ceremony, ensuring the act is conducted with honour and respect for the flag’s symbolism.

By adhering to these care instructions, you can keep your flag in excellent condition, preserving its vibrant colours and durability. Your flag represents your pride in Åland, and the care you provide reflects your respect for your heritage.
