To maintain the flag’s quality and keep its colours looking vibrant, please follow the care guidelines below:

  1. Cleaning:

    • Gentle Washing: Wash your flag with a mild detergent to protect its colours. Avoid using bleach or strong chemicals that may affect the fabric.
    • Machine Wash: If using a washing machine, choose a delicate cycle with cold water. Placing the flag in a mesh laundry bag is recommended to avoid snagging.
    • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Do not use a tumble dryer, as high heat can damage or shrink the fabric.
  2. Storage:

    • Proper Storage: Always store the flag completely dry. Place it in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight or humidity to prevent mould and discolouration.
  3. Folding the NAIDOC Flag:

    • Lay the flag flat with the brown side facing upward.
    • Fold the flag in half lengthwise.
    • Fold it again lengthwise, keeping the edges aligned.
    • Fold into thirds or quarters depending on the size, keeping the final fold neat and compact.
    • Store folded flag in a protective bag or container to avoid dust and moisture.
  4. Handling:

    • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep away from rough surfaces or sharp items that could cause tears or snags.
    • Secure Installation: Attach the flag firmly to prevent stress or stretching during display.
    • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during storms or at night to prolong its lifespan.
  5. Repairs:

    • Minor Repairs: If you notice minor fraying or a small tear, it is best to stop using the flag and have it repaired by a professional.
    • Replacement: When significant wear is visible, consider replacing the flag to maintain a respectful and presentable appearance.

Flying the NAIDOC Flag:

  • Use a sturdy flagpole or rope system compatible with the flag’s header and loops.
  • Raise the flag smoothly and avoid dragging it across the ground.
  • Display the flag in a prominent and respectful location, ideally during NAIDOC Week or commemorative events.
  • Lower the flag before nightfall unless it is properly illuminated.

By following these guidelines, your flag will retain its colour and structure for longer. Caring for your flag is a meaningful way to honour the cultural significance it represents.
