Flag Care & Maintenance

To help maintain the appearance and longevity of your Singapore Flag, follow these care guidelines:

1. Cleaning
   • Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent to help preserve the fabric and colours. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
   • Machine Washing: If machine washing is required, place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag and use a gentle cold-water cycle.
   • Drying: Air dry by laying the flag flat or hanging it. Avoid tumble drying, as excessive heat may damage the fabric.
2. Storage
   • Store Correctly: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
3. Folding the Singapore Flag
   • Lay the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface.
   • Fold the flag lengthwise, aligning the red and white sections with the crescent moon and stars facing outward.
   • Fold the flag in half again, keeping the red section on the outside.
   • Fold into thirds, ensuring the folds remain neat and even.
   • Continue folding until the flag forms a compact rectangle with the crescent moon and stars visible on the outer fold.

Flying the Singapore Flag

• Raising the Flag
  • Header with Loops: Secure the reinforced loops to the flagpole or halyard using suitable clips before raising.
  • Vertical Sleeve: Slide the sleeve over the flagpole and ensure the flag is securely positioned.
  • Raise the flag smoothly and ensure it does not touch the ground during installation.
  • Display the crescent moon and stars facing forward and clearly visible.
• Displaying the Flag
  • For horizontal display, position the crescent moon and stars in the upper-left corner.
  • For vertical display, position the crescent moon and stars in the upper-right corner.
  • Keep the flag clear of the ground and surrounding obstacles.
• Flying at Half-Mast
  • Raise the flag fully before lowering it to the half-mast position.
  • When lowering, return the flag to the top of the pole before bringing it down completely.
• Sunrise & Sunset Etiquette
  • Traditionally, the flag is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset.
  • If displayed overnight, ensure adequate illumination.
• Weather Conditions
  • Avoid displaying the flag during severe weather conditions where possible.
  • Remove the flag promptly during heavy rain, strong winds, or storms to minimise wear.
• Retiring the Flag
